Top Dishes to Try When in the Maldives – Tropical Foodie Discoveries

Just as enticing as its beaches are the diverse dishes in Maldives made up of distinctive and delectable flavours. Be you a bona fide foodie or just have a culinary curiosity, here are some of the main local dishes well worth trying when next in the country.

1

Mas Huni

A popular way for Maldivians to begin their day is to enjoy a breakfast that features mas huni. This dish (like many others in the country) makes use of tuna which is shredded and mixed with another much-used island ingredient; grated coconut. To this is added chilli, onion and some lime to make a yummy creation that is usually eaten with roshi (similar to chapati bread) and accompanied with tea.

2

Garudhiya

Another dish that is popular at local homes is a traditional fish broth or soup called garudhiya. One of the main ingredients is fresh tuna which is cooked in water along with chopped-up chillies, onion, garlic, curry leaves, lime and various other select seasonings; they all come together to offer the perfect flavour combination. Best eaten hot and with rice, this soup which is both light and zesty will make you crave for more!

3

Fish Curries

Curries are much loved as well and are found at both simple eateries and the best restaurants in Maldives. As you may have guessed, fish curries are amongst the most commonly made dishes and one can savour them while staying at island resorts the likes of Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives. While different varieties of fish may be used for such dishes, a perennial favourite choice is tuna which is the key ingredient to make curries such as kandu kukulhu.

4

Masroshi

When it comes to traditional snacks in Maldives, masroshi is one you should try. It is made using dough that consists of flour, salt, water and oil; into this goes the yummy filling which usually has ingredients like tuna (no surprises there!), garlic, grated coconut, ginger, onion, lime and hot peppers. After the dough is stuffed, it is rolled into a ball and then flattened before being fried till it becomes golden in colour.

5

Boshi Mashuni

Those who love salads should definitely look to try boshi mashuni which is a salad made from banana flowers, something you may not have had the chance to eat in your home country. Shredded banana flowers are used for this dish and are combined with various spices and fresh coconut. Depending on where it is being made, boshi mashuni will also include ingredients like onion, chilli, turmeric and lime which blend perfectly to give it that extra "kick".

6

Saagu Bondibai

No list of the top dishes in Maldives would be complete without mentioning a popular dessert which is exactly what saagu bondibai is! This yummylicious sago pudding makes for the perfect end to a meal; apart from the sago which has a unique spongy texture, the pudding features condensed milk and coconut milk as well as rose and cardamom which lend a unique flavour to this delicious sweet treat.
