Top Maldivian dishes you've never heard of – Exploring a tropical food culture

Ever wondered why the Maldivian food culture is worth exploring? Although it is underrated in some other countries, you get the best and the freshest here in the Maldives, because all of them are born here. Try these dishes when you are in the Maldives and you'll feel delighted.

1

Where to have the best food experiences?

No matter when you plan to visit this amazing tropical destination, its great food scene awaits you to grant an experience. Yes, most of the food items you'll across have tuna and coconut in it, but that doesn't mean that they get bored at all. Head to an island resort the likes of Saii Lagoon Maldives when you are holidaying, and with the wide range of Maldives café options offered to you there, you'll be able to know more about the traditional and modern dishes in the Maldives.

2

Bis keemiya

If you are someone who loves the Asian snacks such as samosa and spring roll, you are going to love this Maldivian dish for sure. Often, they are stuffed with shredded cabbage, sliced onions, and hardboiled eggs and when it comes to its pastry, that's light and chewy.

3

Boshi mashuni

When you look for Boshi mashuni on your menu, it will say 'banana flower salad' within brackets in front of it. It's a beautiful blend of shredded banana flowers, and fresh coconuts and spices also get added to it. Then a savoury taste comes with the addition of curry leaves, cumin, and turmeric. It's delicious and has several health benefits as well.

4

Garudhiya

It's a traditional Maldivian fish soup that has a very easy recipe. The basic component is fresh tuna (which is of course so commonly found in the Maldives) and tuna is what that provides the umami flavour to the soup. Curry leaves, garlic, onions, and chilli also add their unique tastes in this, and as lime is also added, you are guaranteed an awesome overall taste.

5

Huni roshi

Have you travelled to Sri Lanka, located very close to the Maldives earlier? If that's the case, you must have tasted their amazing morning dish- pol roti. It's also so close to the concept of 'chapati's in India, but anyhow, Maldivians call it 'huni roshi'. They are crispy on the outside and chewy inside. Blends equally with a salad or some curry.

6

Saagu bondibai

Sago pudding! Doesn't that name itself bring you some excitement? Although the people in other countries (especially the westerners) do not get to have sago often, for Maldivians, that's not the case. The ingredients to this tasty pudding include coconut milk, rose, cardamom, and condensed milk.

7

Kulhimas

Kulhi means hot or spicy in the local language in the Maldives, and mas means fish. So, as the name suggests it's a fish dish that's spicier than the rest. Many of them eat this dish together with huni roshi for their breakfasts.
