The Do’s and Don’ts of Desert Survival – Update Your Skills!

The desert is beautiful but also deadly. It is not just a way to test your limits, especially in a wild country the likes of the Middle East, but also a massive place full of everything that will burn, sting or bite you if you give it the chance. Learn the basic dos and don'ts of desert survival.

1

Do Gain as Much Information as Possible

Before you go out into an expedition in the desert, do some background research on the place you are planning to go to. Know the lay of the land. Learn where you can find water sources, learn how to get there. Have an intimate understanding of the maps of the area and then consider some basic survival skills like building a fire or creating a solar still so you know you are ready for the arduous ordeal.

2

Don't Drink Urine

It doesn't have to be an ordeal if you don't want to. But survivalism in itself is an art that once can learn to perfect. One of the misconceptions people have is that they believe drinking your own urine when you don't have water, helps. This has been further established by popular media of survivalism. However, this is not the case. The reason pee leaves the body is that it is made up of waste products that the body doesn't need. So, don't put it back in. Consider less vile options instead.

3

Do Find a Safe Shelter

If you are spending the night in the desert? The first thing you should think about when making your shelter is to ensure that no spiders, snakes or scorpions can get in during the night and bite you. Keep in mind that in the desert there are lots of venomous creatures. The best option would be a completely closed tent or a vehicle. Snakes especially come looking for warmth so make sure you don't leave any wriggle room for creepie crawlies to try and snuggle in with you.

4

Don't Ignore Your Hands and Feet

Extreme activities in Oman is something that everyone has expressed the need to try. It won't be as comfortable as sitting back in your luxurious room in one of the Oman Hotels, but it will colour your experience. So, when you are out there in the desert, make sure you keep an eye on your arms and legs and not leave them susceptible to venomous stings and bites. If you do get bitten immediately cleanse the bite with water and soap, remove all jewellery from around it and try to minimise the swelling with a moist dressing. Seek medical attention as soon as you can.

5

Do Keep Your Skin Covered

Keep as much of your skin covered as possible when you go out to the desert in breathable light-coloured fabrics. Cotton is highly recommended as it decreases the evaporation from your pores when you sweat. Make sure you change into a dry pair of clothes when night falls, so you don't catch hypothermia in the cold desert nights.
