Singapore's street food culture has become an enigma of its own and has recently gained traction outside of the city-state thanks to its prominent promotion in tv documentary and mainstream movie culture. If you're in Singapore, here are the top ten signature eats you got to try.


Singapore Chicken Rice

You can get Singapore Chicken rice at a street food stand or in the buffet at one of the luxurious hotels in Singapore. It has found its way into the list of national dishes in Singapore. The rice is cooked in a clear chicken broth and results in a delicious succulent flavour.


Singapore Chili Crab

What is known as the most prominent and popular national dish of Singapore is the Singapore Chili crab. It is made from Sri Lankan King crabs cooked in a rich tomato and chilli gravy. It is a messy dish to eat and the restaurants in hotels like Pan Pacific Singapore provide you with buns to soak up the access sauce.


Choy Sum

Choy sum is a Chinese vegetable that has a lot in common with bok choy. It is usually served alongside chilli crab, fried with chopped garlic.

Singaporean carrot cake is called Chai Tow Kuay. It is nothing like you imagine however as the "cake" is cut up and fried and in soy sauce and fish sauce with vegetables and eggs. It is a greasy and delicious dish that you should definitely try when you are in Singapore.


Barbecued Stingray

Barbecued stingray is often served with chilli sambal and wrapped in a banana leaf. It is a spicy and flavourful dish that is grilled in the banana leaf and so contains a distinct taste. You can eat it with lime and tomato pickle.


Friend Hokkien Mee

Fried Hokkien Mee is rice vermicelli noodles and thick egg noodles that are cooked together in a seafood broth. It is either topped with shrimp, pork belly, squid and lard and in most cases all four of these toppings followed by a generous amount of hot chilli sauce.


Kaya Toast

Simple and delicious, Kaya toast is Singapore's national breakfast meal. The toast is grilled on a charcoal flame and covered generously in coconut jam. It is served together with soft-boiled eggs and coffee. You add soya sauce and pepper to the soft boiled eggs and use the kaya toast to pick it up.


Chui Kueh

A dense rice cake topped in savoury vegetables is what Chui Kueh is. It is very popular among street food districts.
