5 reasons to visit Luang Prabang – The Charming Reaches of Laos

Luang Prabang is definitely a destination you should add to your travel list. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, the city is a mix of vibrant culture, stunning scenery and an inviting atmosphere. If you're still not convinced, here're 5 reasons to visit Luang Prabang.

1

The Boat Rides

One of the most famous rivers in the world – the majestic Mekong River – flows through Luang Prabang. So, why not indulge in a relaxing cruise along these waters, taking in all the fascinating sights and sounds it has to offer. You'll find cruises for all kinds of budgets here, from a slow ride across a banana boat to a two-day long trip on a luxury vessel – the choice is up to you. If you're staying at a major resort or hotel Luang Prabang has to offer – like the Avani+ Luang Prabang – be sure to check if they offer their own tours along the Mekong because chances are, they do.

The Flavours of Luang Prabang

The cuisine that Laos has to offer is definitely unique, and you owe it to yourself to go on a bit of a culinary escapade while you're here in Luang Prabang. One of the best experiences to be had here is actually travelling along the Nam Khan River, stopping at a variety of restaurants to try out local flavours. A favourite of many tourists is the famed Tamarind Restaurant. The establishment serves some of the most delectable bamboo chips you'll ever taste, so be sure to order yourself a plateful, and maybe even a second serving!

3

The Night Markets

If there's a shopaholic stuck inside you, you'll be delighted to know that Luang Prabang has some of the best night markets found in Laos, and maybe in the entirety of South East Asia! These markets are primarily targeted towards tourists, so you'll find a diverse crowd always browsing away at these spots. Most night markets also have a number of bars and restaurants in the vicinity, so you can stop by for a drink or a bite to eat after getting your shopping fix on.

4

Interact with Gentle Giants

You'll find several elephant sanctuaries scattered around Luang Prabang. These provide a home for old and sick individuals as well as babies who were left as orphans in the wild. A visit to one of these sanctuaries will let you get up-close and personal with these gentle giants – perhaps even form a connection with these intelligent pachyderms. Activities to try out include feeding the elephants, bathing them and even bottle-feeding the little ones.

5

Hidden Gems

Aside from all this excitement, there's still a litany of hidden gems and secret locations to discover in Luang Prabang. For example, there's the secluded Kuang Si Falls that's tucked away in a reclusive green wilderness. If you sneak your way up here, you'll not only be treated to the sight of this magnificent waterfall, but also to a secret infinity pool that's found right at the base of the falls.
