Things to do at night in Kandy – Nightlife in a cultural city

The ancient city in Sri Lanka, Kandy is still an eventful one even – even at night. In the day time, you can head to the Temple of the Tooth Relic and Peradeniya Botanical Gardens to enjoy the happy vibes. Here is a list of things that you can try out in the night.

1

Walk around the city freely

Kandy can be one of the busiest cities to walk around in the day time. If a peaceful walk alone or with a bunch of your friends is what you need, you'll have to opt for the night time. Do not worry, Kandy is still lively in the night as well. Take a walk around the Kandy Lake, and enjoy how beautiful the surroundings are. The pathways are well-lit, and even if you are walking alone, you really don't have to worry about safety.

2

Enjoy dinner at a good restaurant

Kandy has many impressive restaurants that have all types of international cuisines. But if you choose to stay at a resort the likes of Hunas Falls Hotel Kandy, you do not need to travel so far in search of a restaurant. Enjoy everything that the hotel's restaurant has in store for you, and in addition to the good food, they will also most probably add some live music to your dining experience.

3

Hangout with the locals

If you are a frequent traveller, you must be knowing how fun is it to hang out with the locals and share some unique experiences? You can do this in Kandy too. If you've been to other parts of Sri Lanka, you will notice a difference in the people in Kandy. Sri Lankans are anyways friendly and pleasant, but the people of Kandy are much friendlier than the rest. Learn some easy Sinhalese words such as 'kohomada' (how are you?) and 'ehemada' (is that so?) and use them when talking to the locals that you meet. This is a great way to network with them, and you'll surely gain some good Sri Lankan friends like this.

4

Do some shopping at KCC

The Kandy City Center (KCC) located so close to the Temple of Tooth Relic is one of the most popular shopping hubs in Kandy. It's a modern shopping complex that has many elements for you, including entertainment zones, cafes, and of course many retail outlets of every sort. The shopping complex is open till around 9.00 pm in the night.

5

Watching the Kandy Dalada Perahera

Well, this is not an activity that you can do all throughout the year, because the 'perahera' (procession) is only held during the months of July-August every year. It's the most vibrant cultural procession in Asia, and you can also witness the proud heritage of Sri Lanka through the various items in the procession. The event is held in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, and to see the royal tusker carrying the Relic is one of the most awesome moments in this event. However, if you are visiting during this season, it's ideal to book your resort in Kandy way in advance to avoid possible inconveniences.
