I find myself frequently encountering neat little tools and games made by independent devs. In order to ensure they continue being able to sell their software for a profit, they often use closed-source licenses. I am torn between wanting to stubbornly insist that the software I use be open for anyone to modify, and wanting to support the creators/use their interesting product. I understand why they'd want to control their creation, as it would, in many cases, be much more difficult to profit, which is already a struggle. I don't believe that FOSS should be an all or nothing game, but how can I determine what closed systems are ethical and which are not?
As a related side-note, are there any profitable open-source business models for end-user centered projects? The business models I've seen tend to focus on getting corporate support (often from corporations that have no respect for the freedom of their users), but this doesn't seem viable for a game or app developer who is making products for the general public.
Edit: My title is poorly worded, I did not mean that people aught to be forced to open-source their projects. It probably would have been better to say "when should closed-source software be rejected on the grounds that is is closed-source", which I think is analogous to demanding something be open source if we assume that the creator wants users (which, admittedly, they may not). "I will not use your product because it is not open source" is basically the same as saying "you have to make your project open source if you want me to use it".
