5 Places to Visit in Chiang Rai – The Land of Smiles!

The reason that tourists have started flocking to Chiang Rai is for the sheer magnitude of historical significance, the lush and thick jungles and culture that are readily available. A far cry from Bangkok, Chiang Rai is where you go if you want an authentic experience of rural Thai excellence.

1

Black House (Baan Dam Museum)

Baan Dam Museum houses some of the fantastic visions of the late national artist extraordinaire Thawan Duchanee. His eeriest and most impressive works are located in this complex of 40 northern temple like architecture. The buildings look like something out of a fantasy novel and the artwork of Thawan Duchanee is perfect with dark concepts like skulls, bones, horns and skin. It is completely up for interpretation.

2

White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)

The White Temple is amazing and extremely place of worship with a dazzling history of its own. The temple was deteriorated and falling apart before it was given a new life by a national artist whose renovation resulted in a dramatic overhaul that makes the all-white exterior of the temple look like it's a building from heaven. The best thing about the white temple is how the artist fitted modern pop culture into the temple carvings in a way that it doesn't look out of place in the least.

3

Chiang Rai Clock Tower

The Chiang Rai Clock tower was only completed in 2008 by local artist Charlermchai Kositpipat who was also responsible for the renovation of the white temple. A completely and phenomenally golden structure, it is impossible to miss if you are in the city especially at night when the clock tower glitters and puts on a light and sounds show at 7, 8 and 9 pm every day. It is a fascinating modern Thai landmark that is easily accessible from your hotel in Chiang Rai.

4

Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten)

The Blue Temple is a mystical temple whose interior is done all in blue following the artistic mono-colour scheme that Charlemchai Kosipipat made famous. It was designed by one of his students. While it isn't very big, the temple is completely painted in blue both inside and out. You won't take a lot of time exploring the whole temple.

Go Shopping at Night

Shopping at night in Chiang Rai will help you not to sweat during the sunny days. The old city area has many night bazaars that are an integral part of the culture and heritage of the local people. Try some of the northern-style street food, shop for souvenirs and if you are feeling a little bit adventurous, join the locals for a traditional Thai dance. This is located on Chaing Rai Walking Street after which you head right back to your hotel the likes of Hotel Sooknirund. It would be a perfectly enjoyable weekend spent in Chiang Rai, great for you whether you are on a holiday with your family or with your significant other.
