Top Things to do in Bentota Sri Lanka – A beautiful coastal destination

It is really important to plan the places you are going to visit in Sri Lanka before you actually come to this great travel destination. If you prefer a laid-back coastal town that's not too far from Colombo, you may choose 'Bentota' and you'll love it.

Enjoying the beach

While enjoying all luxury at hotels the likes of Saman Villas located by the beach, why will you miss enjoying the beauty of the shores when it's so near? The beaches you find in Bentota are serene and this is why you should choose Bentota for a leisure holiday to be spent in complete tranquillity. You can swim in the waves and also engage in a number of water sports such as jet-skiing, windsurfing, banana boat rides and even canyoning.

Visiting the Brief Garden

Have you heard of the world-renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa and his work? Then you must have heard of his brother as well- Bevis Bawa. The Brief Garden in Beruwala (very close to Bentota) was designed by Bevis Bawa and this garden is a paradise for those who love serenity. The garden spreads across more than 5 acres and is full of rare sculptures and structures amidst well-maintained trees and bushes.

Madu Ganga River Safari

This is an experience that many guests residing at boutique hotels in Bentota do not miss out on. A Madu Ganga River Safari simply means a basic cruise through the mangroves that help you explore the beauty of nature and also of the nearby islands. A guided safari will let you know more about the history of this area and also its importance biologically and ecologically. If you are a bird lover, make sure you experience this safari for sure as you will then get exposed to more than 100 bird species.

Worship at the Kande Viharaya

In Sinhalese, Kande Viharaya means 'the temple on a hill', but no- this is not about hiking! It's an ancient temple from the 1700s and has been a pioneer centre in terms of Buddhist education in Sri Lanka. There is a giant Buddha Statue established in this premises and in addition to that, there are also some great frescoes and sculptures that belong to the 15th – 19th century to be explored.

Visiting Lunuganga

If you visited the Brief Garden and liked everything about it, there's another similar attraction in Bentota that you'll love seeing. This is called 'Lunuganga' and is the home of the architect Geoffrey Bawa. Needless to say, it's indeed about amazing architecture and experts say that it's a perfect illustration of 'tropical modernism' by Bawa.

Heading to Galle

Although Galle is located about 50kms south of Bentota, thanks to the expressway, reaching Galle is very fast and easy nowadays. The Galle Dutch Fort is there to be explored, and in addition to that, there is also the Galle International Cricket Stadium and many other museums to please your traveller senses.
