One of Isan's four main cities, Khon Kaen offers much to experience on a holiday adventure in Thailand. Be it sacred temples, nature-based attractions, museums, family fun or even cobras (yes, you read that right!) there are unique discoveries to be made when you visit.
One of the most distinctive temples in Thailand, Wat Thung Setthi is known for several fascinating elements including a charming white exterior that combines accents of blue and gold. The site is home to a chedi which houses a sacred relic of the Buddha, the Chapel of the First Buddha and an outdoor museum that depicts the punishments that await sinners in hell. One of the truly unique aspects of this temple are the etchings made on glass windows to depict moralistic teachings; characters featured include those from pop culture be it Mickey Mouse or Darth Vader!
Those who love nature or are just looking for a place to get in some recreation can head to the lake known as Bueng Kaen Nakhon. For travellers enjoying accommodation at a centrally located hotel, Khon Kaen attractions such as this lake are only a short drive away. Spanning around four kilometres, it offers an idyllic place to spend your time and is popular for jogging, playing basketball and riding bikes. With its tree-lined areas, picnic spots, skate park, pedal-boats and playgrounds for kids, this spot is worth a visit for the whole family.
To gain insights into the history and heritage of the region, one can head to the Khon Kaen National Museum. Within a five-minute cab ride from Avani Khon Kaen Hotel & Convention Centre, this museum showcases a number of artefacts including those found at the archaeological site of Ban Chiang which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site too. Ancient tools, bas relief, pottery, musical instruments, images of Buddha and dinosaur fossils are amongst the many exhibits that are on display here.

One of the best family attractions in Khon Kaen, this Jurassic-period themed waterpark has plenty of rides and slides to keep all ages satisfied. Highlights include the thrilling Magicone waterslide, the exhilarating Space Shuttle tube ride and the speed-filled Looping Rocket. The Family Rafting Slide is ideal as a shared experience, while the huge water-play structure with its dinosaur-themed elements is bound to be a hit with the little ones.
Do movies like Anaconda and Snakes on a Plane fill you with delight rather than dread? If so, a visit to the King Cobra Village is for you! Also known as Ban Khok Sanga, this site can be found around 30 km from Khon Kaen; things to do when here include watching special shows featuring snakes and their handlers who seemingly have no fear of these reptiles. You will also find pens with all manner of snakes, some of which you will have the chance to hold.
