The Tune,"Yi Jian Mei," has become a worldwide phenomenon, especially in Scandinavia, where it's vaulted to the Spotify Viral 50 graphs of Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
A Line from the song--"xue hua piao piao bei feng xiao xiao"--continues to be used as a non-sequitur on the internet. As TikTok users scratch their heads over what the lyrics mean the line has seen a surge of searches on Google.
How Did a pop tune from 1983 wind up taking the world by storm? Like most things online, it started with a movie that was random.
It began with a man singing in the snow
Most Chinese people who grew up in the 1980s and'90s know"Yi Jian Mei." It's a melancholic love ballad that compares the undying love of the singer into a blossoming plum tree in the midst of winter.
Initially the theme tune the course became a hit, and Fei Yu-ching, its singer, became a household name.
Fast Ahead to 2020. On Jan. 6, an actor-turned-director called Zhang Aiqin posted a 10-second movie of himself singing the tune's iconic line.
While not really a household name, Zhang has played with supporting roles in several Chinese blockbusters. His odd appearance brought him the endearing nickname"Duck Egg." On Kuaishou, a TikTok-like program in China, he calls himself"Brother Egg."
In The clip, and that he submitted to Kuaishou, he plays a brief rendition of"Yi Jian Mei" outside, surrounded by bare branches and thick snow. The line"xue hua piao piao bei feng xiao xiao" signifies"that the snowflakes are fluttering along with the north wind is blowing."
The video has since been seen over 3.2 million occasions by Kuaishou's mostly China-based users.
It might have just stopped there if not to the power of the net.
In a series of events detailed by Know Your Meme, an individual discovered Zhang's movie in February and shared it on YouTube.

One user came up with the notion of pairing a hip hop remix of"Yi Jian Mei" using a sexist joke. Some found it humorous, and there was a meme born. One of those top videos has over 800,000 enjoys so much, and there's even a remix with Childish Gambino.
As For Zhang, whose rendition of the Chinese classic set a worldwide trend off, he told Abacus that he had been flattered by the song's reception.
"I Feel rather excited and honored my movie clip is clicked abroad And being acknowledged by so many overseas friends," he explained via a WeChat audio message.
