Questions to ask a private car seller

Many people feel that the car dealer tries too hard to scam customers out of a good deal. That is why many consumers turn to website, like Craigslist or Utah’s KSL. Most people that put up their nifty Corvettes or Ford Mustangs on the website for sale are honest people that, for one reason or another, need to sell their car honestly. But as many know, even in Utah people aren’t always honest, which is why you need to be inquisitive about the car they’re selling.

1

Ask if they are the original owner

Ask if they are the original owner

If they bought it straight from the Ford dealer then you’re in luck, because it is harder to trace a history back multiple buyers. This way, you can ask about the frequency of oil changes and such, otherwise they’ll have to guess about how the previous owner handled it.

2

Ask for the count on the odometer

Ask for the count on the odometer

A reasonable count should be a little less than 100,000 miles, depending on the make. Some brands like Ford or Honda go a long way. Any more merits a price reduction.

3

Ask for any service records

Ask for any service records

Even if a car has recovered from a particularly bad accident or required a major part replacement, it is still good to know. If a car had a problem in the past, it will most likely have that same problem in the future.

4

Ask why they’re selling the car.

Ask why they’re selling the car.

This is a good way to negotiate price: if they bought a new car and got a less-than-ideal trade-in price from the dealer, chances are they are looking to sell it for something more on their own. If you are able to discern this, you can call them out and negotiate a lower price.

5

Ask for a test drive

Ask for a test drive

Any good dealer knows that a test drive is what sells the car, and the same applies to private sales. This proves to you, the consumer, that A: the seller is a real person, and B: the car is in the condition that the seller says it’s in. You also get to see firsthand if there are any dents or scratches.
