The Top Things to Pack for a Kandy Holiday – Plan a Getaway to the Hills

The hill capital of Sri Lanka, the city of Kandy has a rich heritage and is set amidst breathtaking natural beauty. One of the best things to do in Sri Lanka is to explore this enchanting destination, though it always helps to prepare ahead especially in terms of what to pack.

1

Shorts / Skirts

Chances are you are going to do a lot of walking around in Kandy and with that in mind, packing shorts and / or skirts (knee-length or longer) is a good idea. Remember, that even though the city is in the hills, it can get quite hot though it may not be as humid as the weather in the coastal areas. That said, it is also a good idea to have a pair of slacks / longs or a dress which can be worn for any special occasions.

2

T-shirts / Tops

As mentioned, having clothing to combat the heat is needed even in the cooler climes of Kandy. Light cotton t-shirts or tops are a popular choice, though you can also opt for long-sleeve attire which can be rolled-up if it gets too hot. If you are planning to enjoy some fine dining at one of the luxury hotels Kandy has to offer, you may want to dress up, in which case pack a dressy shirt or outfit.

3

Conservative Attire

What is meant by conservative attire is clothing that covers bare shoulders or legs; this is important when it comes to visiting sacred sites and temples. For example, one of the most well-known attractions in Kandy is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic within easy reach of Earl's Regency; those planning a visit here should wear longs or long skirts covering the legs and avoid any sleeveless tops either. It also helps to take a shawl which can be used to wrap around your shoulders if need be.

4

Sweaters / Jackets

While during the day it can get hot, the temperature tends to drop in the early mornings and nights. It is generally rather pleasant but can get quite chilly too. Thus, it is well worth packing a light sweater or two just in case it gets too cold for you. While a heavy jacket may not be needed, if you are planning on heading off on hikes from Kandy to sites such as the Knuckles Mountain Range, do bring one along.

5

Footwear & Other Items

For those going to explore the town, light shoes or sneakers are ideal, though do remember you will have to remove them to enter most sacred sites. It is common for locals to wear comfy flip-flops, flats or sandals and you can follow suit as well. Sturdy shoes for hiking will also be useful at places like the Udawattakele Forest Reserve which can be found near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Don't forget to also pack items that will provide adequate protection from the sun during your adventures; these include broad-spectrum sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat or cap and a good pair of sunglasses.
