Mirissa is a small little town that makes for a wonderful beach holiday destination in beautiful Sri Lanka! However, it can be quite difficult to figure out what to do here as most of the attractions are little known to travellers. Refer to this guide for a few places to visit if you are travelling to Mirissa with kids.

Visit the snake farm

This is one of the lesser-known attractions in Mirissa, but still, an exciting one to visit with kids who are often curious about wildlife. The snake farm is run by a doctor who also loves snakes. He rescues snakes and rehabilitates them. While doing this he also takes some poison from the creature to make an antidote for the venom. Apparently, there are about 350 people who die from snake bites per year in Sri Lanka, and this is the only man who is able to treat snake bites properly. The entrance fee costs LKR 1000, you'll see a large variety of snakes here.

Polhena Beach

Also known as Turtle Beach, there is much to experience here with nature. The beach is well-known but not crowded at all. The waters here are shallow and perfect for a little swim in the beach. The best part of all is the fact that there are turtles on the beach here and you get to observe them free of charge! There are about 15 turtles living on the beach. This place is about a 10-minute drive away from hotels like Sri Sharavi Beach Villas & Spa. The kids are sure to love it with plenty of space to run about and shallow water to play in. You can also rent out snorkel equipment for LKR 400 if you plan on going for a snorkel.

Parrot Rock

You can spend about 30-minutes by the rock which is places at the end of the bay. Climb it and a stunning view awaits you. If you plan on spending more time here, you can enjoy a relaxing swim or snorkel in the rock pools below. The waters a crystal clear and warm and makes for the ideal peace and quiet spot on the beach.

Coconut Tree Hill

Well, just as the name states, this is a hill filled with coconut trees by the beach. It is quite a popular spot for Instagram photos. The place can get really crowded, but the best time to visit would be around 7 am in the morning if you want the place to yourself. Besides being a popular Instagram spot, it is also a good place to relax and soak in the tranquil views of the beach here.

Secret beach

The beach is not literally secret any longer, yet there is no big crowd here most of the time either. If you are travelling with kids, this is yet another beach where the kids can play in shallow waters while you relax in the shade of the trees.
