Top things to do in Sigiriya – A visit to the cultural triangle

Being a part of the cultural triangle, Sigiriya is an amazing place to visit in Sri Lanka. It is one of the main historical sites located inland. Sigirya is a small town with a cool climate which is great for relaxing. There are many attractions around within easy reach as well. Here are a few places to visit during your visit to Sigirya.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

In the middle of the forest is a massive rock that sort of oddly stands out. It is visible from wherever you are in Sigiriya. Once you see it, you are sure to want to climb it! It's not just the hike, the Lion Rock has some historical significance as well. It is quite an interesting story about a king who built his palace on the rock because he lived in fear that his brother would kill him someday. The ruins of the castles seem to be fading fast, but there are still a few elements like the water system and ponds here that will surprise you with the master ingenuity of the ancient people of Sri Lanka. The views from the top of the rock are mesmerising indeed and perfect for a photograph. The site is a short distance away from hotels like Heritance Kandalama.

Pidurangala Rock

This is just about a 30-40-minute walk away from Sigiriya. Wake up early in the morning and head out to the rock so that you'll get to see the sunrise from the top of the rock. There are stairs to climb till a certain point and afterwards, it's just boulders which you've got to climb over. Therefore, make sure to wear a good pair of shoes if you decide to come here. reach the top of the rock and you'll see a statue of a reclining Buddha and exquisite views of the surroundings as well!

Anuradhapura

The city of Anuradhapura is just about an hour and a half away from Sigiriya. This city too is an ancient city in the cultural triangle with many remnants of centuries-old history to see. If you are staying at one of the Sigiriya hotels, inquire about transport to visit Anuradhapura city.

Polonnaruwa

This city too is within the cultural triangle and is the place where ancient architecture and art are displayed to its best! The ideal way to explore the city is to hire a bike for about 300 LKR for the day so you'll be able to cover a larger area faster. You'll definitely find it fascinating to see the ruins here.

Dambulla Cave Temple

The cave temple is a famous attraction here in Dambulla. It is one of the most well-preserved cave temples in Sri Lanka. You'll have to take off your shoes before entering. The entrance fee here is about 1500 LKR.

Minneriya National Park

Yet another well-loved attraction close by is Minneriya National Park. Hire a jeep, you'll be charged for the hour, and simply explore the surrounding environment with a great deal of wildlife to spot if you are sharp enough! There are elephants as well, these animals are the highlight here.
