5 Beautiful Beaches in Galle – For Some Vitamin Sea!

Located along the Southwestern coastline of Sri Lanka, Galle is a magnificent city that has a rich heritage of mixed cultures, as a result of colonisation by three nations in the olden days. Apart from its culture, Galle is also a beautiful beach destination that is popular among many tourists.

Unawatuna Beach

If you say that Unawatuna has the most popular beach in the country, you're not wrong! The crescent-shaped beach is a fantastic place to be with its golden brown sands that is greeted now and then with the turquoise blue waters of the Indian Ocean. It is frequented by local and foreign tourists alike. Towards the west end of the beach, one can witness a climb leading towards a small pagoda with a Buddha statue. Although Unawatuna beach can get a bit crowded towards the evenings, it is an excellent place for a refreshing swim!

Bentota Beach

With a clean beach and soft sands, Bentota Beach is what every beach lover must dream at night! If you love serene surroundings, Bentota Beach is a dream come true. Located within a 45-minute driving distance from Colombo, along the southern expressway, it is a popular spot to indulge in a variety of water sports and activities. The ever-swaying palm trees that would lull you into a trance-like state; one can expect to be dazzled by a glorious sunset in the evening.

Akurala Beach

One of the lesser-known beach strips in Galle, the Akurala beach is famous for its calm surroundings that offer a few hours of uninterrupted serenity for its eager visitor. Although weekends may bring in crowds to the beach, visiting it during the early hours will surely get you some peaceful time for yourself. In the shallow waters closer to the beach, one can see corals among which a variety of marine species. The rocks formed further along the sea prevents strong waves, thus making Akurala Beach as a place with one of the safest areas to swim.

Jungle Beach

Accessed by an easy trek through the greenery, Jungle Beach has one of the gorgeous views with clear, turquoise waters that are great for activities such as snorkelling. Although the beach is polluted as a result of large crowds, it is indeed a secluded place surrounded by beautiful greens and blues that offer a pleasing view to the eye.

Koggala Beach

Just 12 kilometres away from the famous Unawatuna beach, lies the paradisiacal Koggala Beach. The absence of food stalls and cafes may have an impact on the deserted surroundings making the beach one of the calmest in the area. In the immediate vicinity, one can take a tour through the Koggala Sea Turtle Farm and Hatchery. Some other attractions near the beach are Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum and Koggala Lake, to name a few. Located just 2 kilometres away from some of the popular hotels in Galle, with one such example being Fortress Resort and Spa, the Koggala Beach is indeed a spectacular creation of nature.
