How to Beat the Summer Heat While Sporting a Beard

There are so many myths associated with growing a beard. One common belief is that beards hold body heat and should be shaven off during the summer months. This may be true to some extent, but in general, humans do not have enough hair to raise their body temperature.

To reduce heat loss, mammals need to grow a minimum of 1,000 hairs per square centimeter. But on average, the adult human head has only 200 to 300 hairs per square centimeter. In another study, it was found that there is no significant difference in the heat flow between normal and cropped hair.

So, if shaving off the beard is not an answer, how does one survive the scorching heat of the summer months? Read on to learn more.

Hydration

Keeping yourself hydrated is very important to minimize the risk of a heat stroke. Consume enough water and eat water-based food such as cucumbers, broccoli, tomatoes, watermelon, kiwi, and apples to keep the body cool. Dehydration prevents the body from getting the nutrients required to help the beard grow healthier, so make sure you drink at least eight glasses of water every day.

Grooming

Sweating is natural during summer. If you do not wash your face regularly, sweat accumulates beneath facial hair and combines with dry skin cells to cause dryness and irritation. This not only leads to an itchy face but also decreases the quality of your beard. Keep the pores under your beard clean to prevent buildup by washing your face regularly. Also, apply a light conditioner along the beard line to ensure the beard stays soft.

Moisturizing

Too much sunlight can make the beard dry. Use quality beard oil to slow down the drying process. You can also opt for a beard balm. Beard oils are lighter than balms and help to soften the hair. Moisturizing will help reduce itching and tame any frizz.

Styling

Heat and humidity cause sweat to accumulate, which in turn causes your beard to develop tangles. Use a beard brush to remove these tangles. Trim your beard and making sure to leave one to two inches behind so that you don’t remove that smart-looking stubble!

Beards aren’t just for the fall and winter months anymore. With a proper beard-care routine, you can sport a dapper look even in the hotter months!
