Pencil Perceptions

Sketching is not just about drawing, it is about noticing every single change and differences about the skin tone and every single attribute and drawing them onto a paper. It is about capturing a special type of feeling, emotion or mood of a character or a particular style of a picture that is recreated. There is always something lifelike that the picture speaks or talks about. It is all about seeing every stroke of the pencil which is a line in a story that is being ready to be read.

Paper quality is an extremely important factor while drawing in photorealistic way. The texture plays a vital role in the charm & feeling of a drawing. The natural feeling of skin that the texture of a Portrait can capture cannot be felt in the highest quality of photographs. This is what differentiates the joy of looking at textured portraits compared to Photographs. At the same time the thickness of the paper also matters in producing a photorealistic effect. Thickness & toughness of paper is also an important factor because it allows artists to give layers on layers of graphite & charcoal without damaging the paper. A good paper allows you to erase the graphite up to a certain extent without losing the original texture of the paper thus maintaining the uniformity of texture all over the drawing.

Best Online Sketching Courses by Sadashiv Sawant

Best Online Sketching Courses by Sadashiv Sawant

A sketch lets you express your ideas in a fun and exciting way while enabling you to visualize your concepts and trace them down on paper. It is more than just outlining a figure or shape; it helps in recording what the artist imagines or sees, or in developing an idea for future or even demonstrates an image, idea or principle graphically.
Sketching is all fun and games until the real pressure of earning strikes us. Due to insufficient earnings or no surety of employment, many people are compelled to take up different careers and pursue art as a hobby, or worse, forget about it.

But who says art is restricted to just sketching and drawing? Meet Sadashiv Sawant, a master of the art of pencil sketching and the founder of Pencil Perceptions, a place of online art classes. Having a mechanical engineering degree and working in the field of architectural visualization for three decades, he developed a keen interest in photoreal rendering using graphite (or pencils) on paper while working for his clients. Such long experience in his field sharpened his vision and he developed an eye for light contours, shades, shadows, and contrast.
His hard work and passion paid off when he won the 2016 European Community Art Award and 2019 America’s Art Awards, both at 1st place! His sketches of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Hollywood legend Sir Sean Connery, and Morgan Freeman are still popular worldwide.

How to Become a Pencil Sketch Artist

How to Become a Pencil Sketch Artist

A pencil sketch artist is the one who creates likenesses of subjects using tools such as graphite, pencil, charcoal or similar mediums. Sketching is the first step to becoming a painter, illustrator or even being pro at sketching. If you wish to take sketch drawing as a career option, you need to learn basic sketching along with following other things like.

Learn the Basics of Pencil Sketch Drawing

Sketch artists develop the skills of hand-eye coordination to draw realistic drawings of their subjects. These skills along with the artistic talent take time to develop, or at least reach the basic level. Hence, to pursue pencil sketching professionally in the future, you need to learn the basics of pencil sketch drawing.
Employment of pencil sketch artists is seen in many fields or organizations, like at an architecture firm, or by the police department. Both these fields require sketching as a basic thing to work their ideas over it. Other artists might even become self-employed to open their art gallery and conduct workshops for future artists.

Develop the Technical Skills
Apart from the basic skills, you require technical skills to become a pro. This can be achieved either by education or learning through seminars, workshops, or offline/online drawing classes that will help you develop new techniques.
Certain skills which these workshops and education would improve are perspective, proportions, composition, anatomy, lighting (and pencil shading), edges, gesture, concept, style, and communication with the picture. The sketch artist should also have an eye for accuracy, strong communication skills and strong stomach if working as a forensic artist.

Pursue Formal Training
Before considering going in the field as a sketch artist, you must master the skills, tools, and techniques the professional sketch artists use. It includes pencil shading and texturing, capturing proportions and replicating facial features, on different surfaces and with different mediums.
It is better if you have a second set of eyes to supervise and guide you towards improvement, which can only happen if you train under a professional artist.

Work to Make Your Portfolio Strong
Since you start studying for the degree in arts, you can take numerous assignments or commissions to include the best representations of your work in your portfolio. And as you progress, you can start working for your own and organize exhibitions of your work.
If you want to work as a freelance sketch artist, take steps to create your brand amidst this huge market of art. In such a case, social media, or having a website, or using other forms of communication will help a lot.

As easy as it may seem to become a Pencil sketch artist and start earning out of pencil sketching, it is quite time-taking. One has to be patient while polishing his skills and struggle throughout the process. But it gives joy as you start earning while doing the work you love to do.

Portrait/drawing tips?

Portrait/drawing tips?

Have you ever thought about sketching and drawing but felt confused about how to draw? If yes, then you’re not alone. Drawing is something all of us try when we are kids, but we eventually give it up as we grow. Even when we think of starting it again, we get nervous as no drawing tutorials seem to help you in learning portrait drawing.
So, where should we start? The answer is this blog. We have listed down 5 tips which will help you as a beginner artist to learn to draw and master the art of sketching.

1. Know your tools
Although art supplies can be overwhelming as they come in a vast range, it is better to start your pencil portrait with the basic, limited and inexpensive supplies. However, it is also necessary to know about each tool and explore different supplies or techniques whenever you can so that you can pick your favourite and work with it in future.

Here is a list of basic supplies which you can use while beginning with your sketches:

  • Three different pencil grade
  • Drawing/sketching paper or sketchbook
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Basic metallic sharpener
  • Blending stumps or tortillons

It is suggested that you start exploring papers of different textures and thicknesses and observe how they affect your drawings to finally arrive at your favourite one.

2. Start with larger and simplified shapes
Every drawing is just a combination of simple shapes like cubes, cylinders, rectangles etc., and understanding this concept helps in visualizing your subjects. When you’re just starting doing this, you might want to delve into details of your drawing right away. But we suggest that you don’t just start adding textures or details in your sketch, at least until you get perfect in sketching a base outline. Once you’ve gained enough practice doing the same, you can further start practising shading and adding textures.

3. Learn to hold the pencil
There is no particular way of holding a pencil; it depends on your comfort and you’ll get to know about it once you start learning to draw.
We generally suggest positioning your hand further away from the tip of your pencil, unlike we do while writing. Also, sketching involves moving your entire arm as you draw, so try to not keep your arms stiff. To know your style, you can switch between different hand positions while you’re drawing.

4. Develop hand-eye coordination for a better portrait drawing
To further progress in our portrait drawing skills, we must level up by drawing from both- photographs, and life. Through this, we develop a good perspective of how our subject would look in reality, with the help of our observational skills and hand-eye coordination.

5. Making sketching your habit
his is the most important tip to keep on practising these skills every day. Taking a certain time out of your schedule to sketch will ensure that you don’t forget your skills.
As a beginner, we recommend you to start your portrait drawing with the supplies that you can afford, and also which are comfortable for you. Start with the larger shapes, and then move to detail your sketch. Make this your habit so that you Learn to draw with time and become a pro.

The importance of maintaining texture in pencil sketch rendering

The importance of maintaining texture in pencil sketch rendering

Adding textures in the pencil sketches is an important skill which fewer artists talk about. Out of the seven elements of art, the texture is considered to be the least important one, yet it is the most challenging one.

The texture is what you feel when you touch or look at something. Like, rough, bumpy, smooth, fuzzy, furry, etc. It requires shape and form to be strong enough so that the base of the sketch is fine. Imagine a portrait drawing with lousy form and adding skin and hair texture to it. It won’t look good, right?
Shape and form help us recognize a subject, while texture can add both beauty and grit to your artwork. Why maintaining texture is important because it is natural in the pencil drawing, unlike smudging. Just like any camera lens focuses on the textured surface, a human eye also gets attracted towards the textures instead of plain surfaces. That’s why pencil drawings have an upper hand above paintings in art.

Here, we are going to talk about adding and maintaining texture in your pencil sketch

Different Textures in pencil art

  • Actual vs. Implied – Actual texture is what you can see and feel. For example, paper mache, which stands firm against the supporting base like a vase and gives the artwork a texture. Implied texture is when you draw and create the illusion to imply that it is a textured surface, by changing background values.
  • Invented vs. Simulated – Simulated texture is the exact copy of a surface, while the invented texture is essentially a simplification which still demonstrates the pattern of the texture.

How to get started
A great way to get started with texture is to first make an example by rubbing off a textured surface. Hence,

  • First, we get the texture from a surface to create an example pencil drawing rendering.
  • Then, we divide this rendered image into several parts with different shades, tones and shapes, and try to imitate the pencil tone of that image.
  • To get the precise texture in our pencil drawing, we try to approximate its tone by the example texture separately for each part.
  • Finally, we combine the parts to form the final pencil drawing.

This method can work better in maintaining the texture of the pencil sketches and get you a step closer to accuracy.

Some tips about materials and equipment before starting your pencil sketch
When you start learning pencil sketching at Pencil Perceptions through our drawing tutorials, you’ll get the detailed exposure on how to add texture and maintain it. However, we recommend certain art tools to be taken care of while focusing on the texture.
Firstly, the paper’s thickness and toughness allow artists to use graphite & charcoal maximally without damaging itself. You can choose from Fabriano Accademia (Designo) 200gsm and Strathmore Bristall Vellum (300 series) 270gsm, to get the best results.
Secondly, the eraser is recommended to be used as minimum as possible. The best method is to use a kneaded eraser which absorbs the extra graphite on the paper just by tapping it, thus ensuring that your paper’s texture is maintained throughout the pencil drawing. You can also look for stick erasers and electric erasers.

The role of perfect tonal values

The role of perfect tonal values

The role tonal values in the art are often not realized and they are usually tricky to perceive and practice. A tonal value is a change or alteration between the light and dark in a painting or reference which creates a perception of a three-dimensional figure on the paper, or realism; our brains do not usually perceive such transitions, instead, we focus on colours and give them more importance in art.

What is a “tone” or “tonal value”?
Tone or tonal value determines how dark or how light the object is, and they do not change with the light, which is contrary to what our eyes perceive. That is why during the artist’s training, they are taught to understand that optical illusions are not illusions; in fact, they are the true impressions on the retina.

To create realistic paintings or pencil portraits, you need to work on the tonal values of your art.

Separate light and shadow
Begin with marking a distinction between the “lights” and “shadows” in your painting. The “light” colours would include all areas whom the light touches directly, while the “shadow” colours would include the rest of the areas that are hidden by the light source, like all shadows and reflected light areas.
Look at your subject from the direction of the light, so you would understand where the light is touching it directly, making that area a “light” area.

Use a value scale
Every colour has an underlying value between white and black which can be infinite, but for simplicity, all the colours of a painting can be placed on a scale of 1 to 9 or 10.
Using a value scale is highly recommended for the artists as it will help you understand tonal relationships and distinguish the colours too. You can create a value scale by yourself too.

Consider relative values
Generally, we perceive anything as “dark” or “light” concerning the surrounding objects. This can really affect our judgments of the tonal values or the colours while drawing from observation.

Explore light effects
As light hits an object directly, there are many areas where it doesn’t reach wholly and many areas where it doesn’t reach at all. This is how light spills over an object and creates areas of light and shade and reflection of light- many such effects need to be explored.

Capture reflected light
To create a realistic sense of light, it’s important to capture the indirect or reflected light in the right intensity. Two factors affect the light: The first is the local value which is the ‘actual’ brightness of an object; you might know that lighter materials reflect light more strongly than darker materials. Next is the distance, as the light gets weaker as it travels long distances.

To achieve realism in your paintings, you need to master the balance between light and dark and overall tonal values. Beginner and advanced artists, both, can learn techniques to improve their values through art classes online and take a step closer to realism.

How do you draw eyes step-by-step?

How do you draw eyes step-by-step?

Eyes are the most integral part of a sketch, and it adds glamour to the complete output. In this article, you will know about the steps using which you can sketch the perfect hyper realistic eyes.

Step 1: Collect All Essential Tools & Assets
It is better if you have the 4B & 6B pencils for starting with the realistic eye sketch. Along with that, you might also need a 2B lead pencil for a softer touch. Get the blending brush as you will need it further while sketching the eyes. You must check out the material list to buy for every artist who is keen to learn sketching and drawing.

Step 2: Draw The Outline Of The Brows & Eye
Firstly, you need to sketch the outline of the eye with the brows. Remember not to press the pencil too hard on the paper while outlining as you will have to erase it further in the steps. Start with brows, frame the eyes and then the pupil.

Step 3: Filling Of The Pupil, Thicken The Borders And Draw The Eye Lashes
Now, you need to fill the pupil first as it will add a contrast effect to the sketch. Use the soft 4B pencil to put layers within the pupil until it appears close to black. Once you have done that, you can go ahead and thicken the borders of the eye and create shadows as per the reference image. Check the light of the reference photo and add the shades accordingly. Once done, you can use the same pencil to draw the eyelashes with gentle strokes.

Step 4: Shade the Eyebrows
Now, thicken the brows with gentle shades and connect it with the eyes to replicate shadow. Now use light stroke pencils to fill the space between the eyes and brows, which will be portraying the shadows over the eye due to light opposition. While you move your pencils, darken the areas where shadows are more prominent such as the left or right corners of the eye.

Step 5: Thicken The Outline Of the Eyeball and Fill the Eye With Light Shades
Use thick strokes to structure the outline of the eyeball and fill the space with light shade. Draw small yet prominent lower lashes and add smoky shades to the part of the image where the light is absent. Use a blending brush to add a more elegant look.

Step 6: Give The Finishing Touch
Once you are done with blending, thicken the borders and darken the shadowy areas including brows, to give a final touch to the realistic eye. The regions around the dark shade portions need to be filled with light shades to make them look prominent.

So, follow these steps if you want to learn how to draw realistic eyes with pencil. There are many online sketching courses available over the internet to guide you with the same. Check them out and master the art of sketching eyes.
