Best 5 Tips to Make Your Flowers Last Longer | Flowers.ie

Flowers play a vital role in everyone’s life. Whether it be for a birthday, anniversary, graduation, sympathy, get well or even just a bunch hand-picked from your garden, it will mean a lot when you give it to someone.

1

Water

WATER is the source of life — even in plants, of course. We make sure that the flower arrangements you ordered will be delivered as fresh as how they are when they left our shop. The flower bouquets have water at the bottom, supported by the wrapper to keep it hydrated while being transported. You may transfer them in a vase afterwards to let the flowers easily breathe, or you may keep it as it is — whichever suits you. Always check the water level and replenish if needed. If the arrangement is in a box, you may water them every after 2–3 days as the flowers are stuck in a floral foam with water, too. But, do not add too much water that you reach the point that it can no longer absorb it. Always remember that it is not good to have too much of anything. When you put the arrangement in a vase, fill it up to ¾ full with fresh tap water (except with tulips only 1/4) and ensure that all the stems are sunken. You may also add flower food (again, except for tulips). Always follow exactly the guidelines at the back of the sachet.

2

SANITATION

SANITATION also applies not only to human but also to plants. For us, it’s like personal hygiene wherein you want to maintain your cleanliness — while as for plants, it’s like keeping their daintiness which is a big factor to their condition. Maintain the cleanliness of the water, if possible, change it frequently particularly when it gets hazy. Always make sure your vase is thoroughly cleaned so that there is no bacterial contamination from previous use. Remove any foliage which lies beneath the water as they will cause bacteria to grow in the water.

3

SUNLIGHT

SUNLIGHT is absolutely good for any plant but is not best for cut flowers. Keep them away from direct heat and sunlight, as it will make them mature or ripen very quick. Placing them near or worse, on top of electric appliances like a refrigerator is a very bad idea and will do them no good. Instead, place them in a cool area to lengthen their life. Also do not place the flowers near a cigarette or fresh fruits as these contain ethylene gas which is not good for them and make it die quickly.

4

TRIM

TRIM or recut the tips of the flower stems diagonally for approximately 1 cm every after 3 days to let water get through and be absorbed. Use sharp scissors to ensure cells from the leaves are unharmed and will still be able to absorb water peacefully. As mentioned from the first tip, water is the main source of life for plants, so it is very important to make sure the flowers are well-hydrated. Also, spray a little water to the petals from time to time to keep it refreshed.

5

REMOVE

REMOVE any wilted parts like petals or leaves so it does not infect other flowers.
