I was experiencing some pain when I bit down (but not when I brushed) a few weeks ago, but it went away and now it's back and it's VERY painful when I brush or eat, it's a quick sharp and extremely painful pain that makes me actually yell. I'm seeing a dentist ASAP.Backround:-I brush my teeth with a soft toothbrush at least twice a day-I am a teeth grinder but don't have a dental mouth guard because I was told it would affect my jaw growth. There is no sensitivity to hot or cold and my tooth doesn't hurt if I tap or bite down on something plastic, just food and when I brush. What dental work may have to be used, I'm hoping it's nothing-but if it is I hope it's just a cavity....Show more

Root canal is required when a cavity in a tooth is reached till its root and when the pulp of the tooth is infected. An endodontist is the right person to tell you if your tooth requires a root canal or not ?
