Top 5 off the beaten tracks in Sri Lanka – go on an adventure!

Since the end of the civil war certain parts of Sri Lanka have been developing rapidly but if you are interested in the less touristy attractions here are five locations you would love to explore.

1

Go to Minneriya National Park

If you love elephants and seeing them in their natural habitat the Minneriya National Park is one location that you should visit. There are several national parks located within the island but while some are extremely commercialised there are some which have animals roaming about freely in their natural habitat. You are guaranteed elephant sightings babies mothers and herds if you opt for a safari in Minneriya National Park.

2

Visit Jaffna and experience the life of the locals

Jaffna is a city that is vibrant and full of life. There are so many different places to see, things to do and food to eat you can stay days in this Northern City and explore to your heart's desire. Sri Lanka holiday tour packages almost always include Jaffna in their itineraries as it is a must-visit location on the island. The best way to explore it is to visit the less popular locations and to mingle with the locals and learn about the city from them. SoulTrek Sri Lanka and other tour companies will have knowledgable tourists and they will be able to provide a great deal of information but the food, traditions, religious practices, and the life can be explained and shared by those who call Jaffna home.

3

Visit Vakarai Beach

While there are so many attractive beaches located around the island, the south and the west have many popular beaches that are extremely popular and can get crowded during the tourist seasons. If you are visiting the east there are many untouched beautiful beaches which are perfect just the way they are.

4

Madu River Safari

The River safari that you will experience in the Mady River is unlike any other river safari. While you will be able to witness the banks of the river, the thriving environment and hear the beautiful voices of the birds that are in the vicinity on a general river safari the Madu River safari offers a completely different experience. The Boat will take you through thick mangroves that create an overhead canopy that will protect you from direct sunlight as you will feel like you are travelling under a cave made of branches, twigs, and vines. This journey is bound to make any nature lover extremely happy as it is like boating and canoeing within another world. Located in the Southen town of Bentota, the location is not too far from the capital city of Colombo.

5

Climb to Sigiriya on the off the beaten track

Sigiriya is a must-visit location in Sri Lanka not only because it is an important aspect of Sri Lankan history but also because it is an astounding creation and is considered as the 8th wonder of the world by those who have witnessed its beauty. The only wat you can get to the summit is on the uneven rock staircase which had been created years ago. The journey is suitable for the young and the old and is bound to last about 2 to 3 hours the most.
