Here are my favorite tech tools for teaching high school Biology
Kahoot is a fun and interactive way to test your student's knowledge. Students can get excited to compete against classmates and use critical thinking to help deepen their understanding of the material taught in class. Kahoot would be used in my classroom to gauge their understanding before a new lesson and after a lesson for test review.
Brain Pop shows videos on many different subjects that students would be learning in class. The website has interactive games, worksheets, teachers can assign work and many other learning/ teaching tools. Brain Pop also allows for alternative assessment because it is beyond the normal pen and paper assessments. In my classroom this would be used as introduction videos.
Nearpod brings multiple technologies together, there is VR, student paced lessons, and lessons can be customized. This tool allows the teacher to "take over" the student screens and show them the powerpoints or lessons that are created by the teacher. This would be used in my classroom because it would allow me to show the students through their device the lesson for the day.
Quizlet is an online platform that allows teachers and students to create study material . This platform can be downloaded onto students devices and smart phones for instant access to study materials. The only downfall to quizlet is that it allows students to cheat on homework and online tests because other students can create the answers and publish them online to allow anyone instant access. Regardless of this barrier it is still a fantastic study tool for highschool level students because it allows for independent studying.
Khan academy is a learning tool for parents, students and teachers. Khan academy offers entire standard aligned courses for students to utilize for independent studying. It also gives high school students SAT practice and interactive learning videos to encourage students to use critical thinking. This would be used in my classroom for independent learning and for homework, I would assign videos for students to watch and include them in the notes for students who need the extra help.
Google classroom lets teachers create an online space for a multitude of things, such as notes, worksheets, and study resources. Google classroom is helpful for when students need materials and lessons that they had missed in class or for reinforcing ideas learned in class. I would use this to allow my students to have all resources at their fingertips rather than relying on peers for information and notes.
The merge cube is a small cube that when it is scanned with a phone or tablet the cube transforms into the object that the teacher wants students to examine. The ability to have real life interaction with objects that normally students would not have the ability to interact with keeps them engaged and focused on the lesson. I would use this in my classroom to show students things like cells that would not normally be seen up close.
Remind is a service that allows students and parents to receive and send messages to the teacher. This resource is helpful because you can remind students of homework, tests and other important information. The only issue is that students can blame the teacher for not sending out a message to remind them of the upcoming assignments. To solve this issue in my classroom it would only be used for major notices rather than a constant reminder for homework.
Plickers are a teaching tool for tests and review. To participate each student or group gets a printed QR code that will allow them to answer A,B,C, or D and the teacher can scan the codes to obtain the student answers. This would be used in my classroom in place of paper tests and for review.
Seesaw can give teachers inspiration for their classroom, students can create portfolios and families can see the progress of their students. This tool is really helpful to show parents where their student is at with their work rather than leaving the parents to wonder until progress reports or report cards. This would be used in my classroom to help parents and families become more connected to the classroom
