March 17-20, 2020: Nontraditional Collections

You may have heard us mention how much more the library can be than just books (though we still really love books). This week, we’re highlighting the very cool and unique items your libraries offer.

The Augusta County libraries have several collections of cool stuff you can check out besides books or movies. You may have heard of our seed library, available all year round, but if you dig baking, we have an assortment of cake pans you can check out! We’ve got all kinds of shapes like partysaurus, castles, and bunnies! Even kids’ favorite characters like Pikachu, Scooby Doo, and Blues Clues. They check out for three weeks, we just ask you to bring them back clean.

The Churchville Library also has a Makerspace with a variety of tools and supplies for your projects. Basic and power tools like the impact drill, electric sander, and wood burners stay in the library, but things like nails, twine, hinges, hooks, and knobs are available in bulk as you need them.

For all you nature lovers, check out the Virginia State Park Nature Backpacks, available at Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County Libraries. Each pack comes with everything you need for a fun, educational day in the woods -- guides to Virginia wildlife, a butterfly net, a magnifying glass for a closer look at your finds, even a pop-up specimen box. (But please, put all your specimens back before you come back inside!) There’s also a free entry pass for any Virginia State Park. Take a trip to your nearest State Park, or just take a closer look at your own backyard. If you’re looking to get a little more in tune with nature this summer, start at your library.

For your art and music appreciation needs, Staunton Public Library has you covered with some out of the ordinary items. If you’re looking to change up the look of your living room or office, you can check out a piece of art! Items range in size and style. There’s reproductions of paintings by famous artists such as Monet or Wyeth and even a couple original paintings. The best part? You can check them out for up to six months at a time.

Perhaps even more fun is the collection of musical equipment that won’t break the bank. If you’re just starting out, you may want to test drive an instrument before investing in one: check out a mandolin or ukulele from our collection. Or if you’re already a guitar pro, try one of our 20+ electric guitar effects pedals to change up your sound. There’s also cymbals and amps.
