I have integrated iPads into my PE classes in several ways. I have used a single iPad to project various exercise apps and essentially let the app do the teaching:) I also have a class set of iPads that I have used as station work for students. I set the iPads around the gym in circuit training style and then one or two students go to each iPad. I sometimes let students pick an app of their choice or I have the app up and ready when they come to class and then when I turn the music on in they gym everyone pushes the start button on the app at the same time and they exercise until time is called or the app routine is over. I have also used QR codes as station work students scan the code and a video of a skill or exercise pops up on their device and they replicate the skill or exercise for an an allotted amount of time. I record my voice which tell the students which activity they should be doing at a particular time and this is mixed with music which helps set the tempo for the activity and along with my voice recording helps transitions from one activity to the next. Great way to teach a little tech and get some exercise:)

I played around with an iPad in my last unit. The most effective way that I found to use the iPad in class was to set up four stations, at three stations the students played a game (student managed) and in the other station, students worked on their learning goal (motor skill). They rotated around the stations and I was able to give each student visual feedback and tips for improvement in about 30 minutes. For the most part all students were actively engaged. I used the app slopro and ubersense. Essentially these apps allow you to play back in slow motion which makes it easier to point out growth areas. As a suggestion, I found that it worked better to video all the students at the station and than review the clips as a group. I felt it was important for all the students in the group to listen in on the teaching tips.

At the moment, we only have one iPad in the department, so we are limited to what we can do. We are a 1 to 1 school, so students bring in their laptops on occasion to do video analysis. In short, students take "before" and "after" action shots of their learning goal. They use the "before" action shot to identify growth areas and they use the "after" action shot to reflect on their improvement. This has been a good experience, but maybe a little too much down time.
