Interesting facts about Mozambique – A mesmerising land like no other

Popular for the numerous stunning beaches along the coast of the Indian ocean Mozambique is a popular tourist destination in Southeast Africa.

Official details

Mozambique which is located in the South East of Africa is officially known as the Republic of Mozambique. The official language used in the country is Portuguese and this is a result of being a colony of Portugal for many years till they gained independence in 1975. Mozambique is the 35th largest country in the world which consists of more than 800,000 square kilometres. The capital of the country is known as Maputo and is also the largest city in Mozambique. You can get a visa on arrival in Mozambique for all nationalities and the process is rather simple and notably easy to follow.

Islands, beaches and a city

Islands of Quirimbas, Inhambane Togo and the Barra Peninsula, The Bazaruto islands and the beaches of Vilanculos are the most popular tourist destinations which are also home to most of the Mozambique hotels. The stunning island and beaches offer a sunny vacation where you get to periodically enjoy the warm water of the Indian ocean and the sun rays along with the food in Mozambique. Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort is also located on the coastline allowing guests to witness beach and city life. Exploring the city is also an exciting journey that is not given a lot of significance until people start exploring and realising the excitement.

The coastline is a major tourist attraction

The coastline in Mozambique is popular not only because of the stunning beaches that you get to spend the vacation at but also because of the marine life and the coral reefs that are thriving in the area. When it comes to marine life there are large marine animals that are frequently sighted in this coastline making it one of the most popular locations to go to for sightings of whales, whale sharks and dolphins.

The national parks are underrated

There are six national parks in total spread across the country. The Gorongosa National Park used to be popular for the safaris but was then criticized due to the cruelty posed upon the animals. However, with time the national park has developed and is one of the must-visit locations in the country as you are able to see a large variety of animals roaming around living in their natural habitat. The park is home to lions, hippos, buffaloes, and rhinos with ongoing conservation and breeding programmes contributing to the increasing population of the wildlife. There are many safaris you can opt for depending on the sightings you wish for on the safaris. If you are an animal lover then the early morning drive or the evening drive would be the best options.

Architecture from the colonial era

Despite the fact that the colonisation by the Portuguese did have some negative bearings on the development and history of Mozambique, the architecture in the country thrived during this era. There are several churches that were built by the Portuguese which are still intact and are known to be popular tourist sights. The Church of San Antonio de la Polana and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception are two of the most prominent religious buildings from the colonial era.
