Fun facts about the Maldives - Exciting facts about the Maldives

The Maldives is one of the most sought-after travel destination in South East Asia and when you visit the country you are able to witness first hand all the reasons that make the country special.

1

So many islands

The country which used to be known as the Maldives Islands is made up of about 1200 different islands. Even though it is one country the country consists of all these islands and from these islands only about 200 islands are inhabited. The 1200 islands are segregated into 22 atolls which have unique features. Male is the capital city of Maldives and the most populated island as well. Most of the resorts in the country occupy individual islands allowing a unique and serene experience to the guests. Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort and most holiday resorts have individual islands which also allows privacy for the guests where they are able to enjoy the sunny island and the food with no interruptions.

2

High land? In the Maldives?

The Maldives is the flattest country in the world and it is said that it will be the first country to be submerged due to the rise of the sea level as a result of global warming. The highest point in the country is only about 2 metres from sea level which makes this the lowest high point in the world. Due to the fact that most of the country is flat, there is no precise location known as the highest point of the Maldives.

3

Island Hopping is an actual activity

If you are staying at a particular Maldives resort that offers surfing, diving and other water sports you are bound to find the other islands around it offering similar excursions. However, if you wish to experience a different vibe on another island, then going island hopping is the best way to experience all the other opportunities. Since there are so many different islands that are separated across different atolls they are popular for various attractions. For example, resorts that are popular for beach cabanas and romantic experiences might not offer water sports and other thrilling excursions. You can do this on a seaplane or a boat or you can plan to stay at different atolls during your vacation which will contribute to a more wholesome experience.

4

Fish and coconut extracts are a must-try

Being a collection of islands, it does not come as a surprise that seafood is a popular food in the country. There are so many different seafood options which are fresh and delightful that the Maldives Cusine includes making different seafood preparations. Apart from the tantalising seafood preparations, the main ingredient that is often used in Maldives cuisine is coconut extracts. Coconut water, coconut milk, grated coconut and coconut oil are frequently used when cooking in the Maldives and this makes a strong contribution to the flavours that derive from the food.

5

The beach is not normal

Sand around the world is generally a golden colour in the shades of beiges and browns. However, sand in the Maldives is known as white and this is due to the fact that the beaches in the Maldives are made with coral extracts. The sand particles are corals that have been destroyed and washed up over the years and that is why the Maldivian beaches tend to have whiter and softer sand.
