5 Things To Do In Weligama

Weligama is one of the largest- and most popular- coastal towns in Sri Lanka. Situated in the depths of the largest bay on the south-west side of the island, Weligama is the ultimate beach getaway. Here are 5 things you should do in Weligama.

1

Surfing

Surfing

Weligama is undoubtedly Sri Lanka’s premier surfing destination on the south coast. Sri Lanka is an island blessed with year-round surfing as the monsoon rains affect different coasts throughout the year, so the season for surfing in the south coast is from December – March. There are several breakpoints in Weligama which are generally for beginners and intermediates, but you can also visit the neighbouring beaches of Midigama- only a 15-minute tuk tuk ride- for more challenging waves. If you have never surfed before then Weligama is the place for you with surf schools dotted along the beach.

2

Visit Taprobane Island

Visit Taprobane Island

Taprobane, is an islet off the coast from Weligama beach which is named after the ancient Greeks’ name for Sri Lanka. During low tide there is a spit of land that links the island to the beach, however when the tide is high you either must wade in the water or take a boat. In the 1930’s an exiled French count made this small island his retreat and built a small white house which peaks through the island's thick greenery. Today, the island has become a hotel and you must visit for a meal or a drink.

Stay At Cape Weligama

Stay At Cape Weligama

Cape Weligama is perhaps the most iconic, and most instagrammable resort in Weligama. Sprawled across 12 acres of land, Cape Weligama consists of 39 villas which are perched on a rocky cliff that overlook the turquoise waters of Weligama. Watch the sunset from the iconic infinity pool and enjoy the warm balmy winds of the south coast, all while experiencing luxury at its finest.

4

Go Whale Watching In Mirissa

Go Whale Watching In Mirissa

Although Mirissa is technically another town on the south coast, Weligama and Mirissa are virtually one since they’re only 10-minute drive apart. Mirissa is an excellent location to go whale watching and has numerous tour operators. You will be taken in a boat to the middle of the ocean where you are almost guaranteed to see blue whales, sperm whales, and pods of spinner dolphins—a once in a lifetime experience.

Eat At Ceylon Sliders

Eat At Ceylon Sliders

Ceylon Sliders is another Weligama restaurant. The small restaurant is the epitome of shabby-chic and it is a must visit at least once on your trip. It tends to get quite crowded in the evening around happy hour so try to get there early and try a burger!
