Top 2 beaches to visit in Tangalle – Tropical bliss in Sri Lanka’s deep-south

Tangalle has always been outshined by Sri Lanka's more famous tourist towns such as Hikkaduwa, Mirissa and Unawatuna but Tangalle too has some amazing untouched beaches.

1

Goyambokka Beach

Goyambokka Beach is one of the best not only in Tangalle but it's one of the best in the country. It's located quite close to some of the more famous Tangalle hotels such as the highly recommended Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort. It is probably the most accessible beach and it is a great place to just spend away an evening. Since its quite close to the Tanglle town, you can easily get a tuk-tuk to take you there for about 200-300 Sri Lankan Rupees (that can vary of course depending on where you are, but it won't be much). There are also quite a few accommodations just a 5 minute walk away from Goyambokka so if you take a liking you can just spend a few days right on the beach. There are a few really cool spots to have a drink or eat some delicious sea-food and there are many places which offer beach chairs for you to just lounge in the sun and enjoy the sweet-salty sea-breeze. The conditions on this beach can change from day to day and waves can get a bit rough so it would be advised to check the conditions before jumping into the ocean however appealing it may seem. There is a very nice place along the beach called 'Think Club'; just a two-storey wooden shack that serves delicious coconut milk and many other local dishes but the best part about it is the view. Climb up the bamboo ladder to the second floor with a drink and just wait for the sun go down – it's magical.

2

Medilla Beach

Medilla beach is one of Tangalle's best-kept secrets – it is not crowded with either locals or tourists and offers a glimpse of a quintessential and unspoilt Sri Lankan beach. It is located a little to the east of the Tangalle town and does not really have any high-end accommodations nearby. However a little trip there is definitely advised. The golden strip of beach is wide and is set between the ocean and a mangrove forest. The ocean here is generally calm however depending on the time of year and the weather, it is possible for the waves to get a bit rough. So check the conditions and the locals will probably tell you not to get in if the sea is too rough.

3

Silent Beach

Undoubtedly the best beach in Tangalle – Silent Beach is stunning and one of the best places to catch a Sri Lankan sunset. Also known as Amanwella Beach it is quite hard to reach but the journey is worth it. It is secluded and peaceful - the beach is lined with palm trees as far as the eye can see and the golden sandy beach really wide. The sea gets a bit steep very quickly from the shore and as with the other beaches in Tangalle its best to check the conditions before jumping in. But you don't even need to swim in the sea to enjoy this serene piece of heaven.
