College has been a safety net for many Utah students during the recession. Many students believe they only have to focus on obtaining a college degree instead of being out in the career field, but just because you’re not in the career field doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be preparing for it. Utah college students need to be more aware that they need to begin their career search as early as their freshmen year.
A degree on it’s own is not substantial enough to obtain a job. Employers are looking for experience as well. This is why it is so important to begin interning as early as your freshmen year. There are many internships available within the state of Utah, and outside of it. Doing an internship will allow you to gain a variety of experiences and make your resume more appealing to employers.
It’s never too early to create a LinkedIn profile. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have, or what your current job title is. List your extra-curricular activities and job history. It doesn’t matter how basic the job is. Having at least some type of job listed shows you are driven and responsible.
One of the best ways to get your name out there is to create a personal website. Your website should include an introduction, your career interests, blog or portfolio and resume. Including a personal website in your resume will give you a leg up on others in Utah that are competing for the same position.
This is an obvious tool, but many students neglect it. Not only do career services centers help you with job placement, they help you with your resume and cover letters as well. You should run your resumes and cover letters by career services even if there is a job you are already interested in. They will help you refine it so that your chances of obtaining the job are higher.
