An absolute treasure, the archipelago that is the island nation of the Republic of Maldives offers its visitors and experience like no other. You probably already know about its turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, but we bet you didn't know these facts about the Maldives.

World's first Underwater Cabinet Meeting

Do you know how they say there is a first-time for everything? Well, it's true, but just sometimes there are somethings that are rather unusual than others – such as hosting the world's first underwater cabinet meeting! Yes, you read that right. Conference rooms are not the only place that meetings are held anymore- underwater counts too! In the year 2009, the then Maldivian government held a cabinet meeting underwater in a keen attempt to create awareness and highlight the very real threat of global warming to this stunning island nation. Although it is quite an unusual setting with the tuxes and office suits taken over by scuba gear and oxygen tanks, we have to say, it is quite the gesture!

2

The flattest country in the world

Did you know that the Maldives holds the Guinness World Record for being the lowest and flattest country in the world where the maximum elevation above sea level is only 2.4 metres? As a result, the threat of rising sea water levels due to the melting polar ice caps is increasing greater. The underwater summit doesn't sound too off-the-rocker anymore, now does it?

3

Home of Whale Sharks

The world's biggest fish, the Whale Shark, seeks refuge in the Maldives. It is one of the handfuls of destinations in the world where these magnificent creatures can be seen around the year. Adventure seekers can book in to go diving with certified instructors for thrilling sessions of swim alongside with a Whale Shark. Now that would surely be an adventure you would never forget right?

The Maldives has 1190 Coral Islands and 26 Atolls

In total, the Maldives has 26 atolls and over 1190 islands of which over 187 are taken over by inhabitants. Out of this 187, a big chunk of 106 islands is simply standalone luxury resorts. Idyllic resorts such as Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives occupy amorously these islands and feature some exquisite signature Maldives villas and water villas.

An island gone too soon?

Due to adverse climatic changes that are currently underway all across the world causing rising sea levels and greater land erosion, the Maldivian archipelago is in serious trouble- possibly even going underwater fully. Coral levels are said to be plummeting fast and the government has put in place strict laws to prevent any further damage and degradation to these spectacular nature's creations. Although it has taken the world this long to realise, the impact of global warming and climate change is not simply a matter of concern, it is more a matter of survival- the threat is overpowering. However, to the delight of all, the government is taking measures to try and minimise the full impact of any harm that is to come to the island nations and to its resident population of people.
