10 Things to know before arriving in Dubai – Tips for visiting the glitzy Emirate

Dubai is as modern as it gets, but it is a conservative, Islamic destination. With that in mind, there are certain things a visitor is supposed to know for a trouble-free stay in Dubai.

1

The best time to visit

Dubai has a hot climate throughout the year, and there's no clear distinction between seasons unless it is a sign that would tell you the varying degrees of the hot climate. The period between October and April, however, is considered to be the winter season, it brings about a clear blue sky and perfect beach weather, the city also receives a bit of rainfall during this season, but it is not up to the degree that would hinder your travel plans.

2

Book your accommodation in advance

Dubai is one of the most popular travel destinations on earth. People visit the city all year round, and most of the hotels near Ibn Battuta Mall are filled to the brim. Whether you choose the likes of Avani Ibn Battuta Hotel Dubai or not, you must always reserve your accommodation in advance.

3

The Ramadan season

If you are visiting during the period of Ramadan, you must take care as to demonstrate proper respect for the local traditions. The Islamic residents of the city refrain from eating during the day, so you mustn't eat or drink anything in public.

4

Dress modestly

Though Dubai is a thoroughly modern city, the city still adheres to traditional, religious customs. So, when choosing clothes for your Dubai trip, make sure your clothes are none too flashy or revealing. Men shouldn't wander around without a shirt, and women shouldn't wear short skirts and clothing items like tank tops.

5

The tipping policy

This isn't necessary when you are at a restaurant in Dubai, but it is deemed common practice. Most eateries include a service charge in your bill, but out of goodwill, you can offer the waiter a small tip. Taxi drivers don't expect a tip, so you don't have to worry on that score, but luggage carriers and workers in supermarkets will expect a small tip.

6

Just the address won't suffice

Don't assume just giving the address to the taxi driver will take you where you want to go in the city. Dubai has an intricate road system, and the address system is unlike what you find in other countries. So, to make sure you are taken to the right destination, give the driver a bit more information; provide them with references to the main landmarks in the city.

7

Don't take pictures without asking permission

Don't ever take a picture of a Muslim female without asking her permission first, unless you are taking pictures of a large touristy area. Also, refrain from taking pictures of military establishments, airports and government buildings.

8

Alcohol consumption

You can consume liquor in Dubai, but don't ever drink or appear drunk in public. Also, you need to have a permit for buying alcohol, and you can only purchase liquor from a licensed establishment. These rules don't apply if you are at a restaurant or a bar, but don't leave the place drunk.

9

No public display of affection

Public display of affection is a big no in Dubai. Many visitors have been arrested for not adhering to this rule; don't hold hands or kiss your significant other in public.

10

Start looking at ticket prices six months ahead

This is not necessary, but most major airlines issue their cheapest seats six months ahead. You don't have to buy tickets six months in advance, but start comparing prices and if your finances allow it, why not make the reservation?
