6 Things to Do when in Dubai – The best attractions of the mega city in the sand

The last few decades have seen Dubai emerge from just a desert state to one of the most 'hip' and 'happening' places on earth. This megacity has so much in store for you.

Burj Khalifa

The tallest tower in the world would naturally be a sight to see – The Burj Khalifa definitely dominates the Dubai skyline and is quite impressive to take in. This amazing feat of engineering stands 828m tall and is best appreciated up close. The tower has an observation deck on the 124th floor and the views are simply breathtaking. But after taking in the views head to the world's tallest lounge that occupies the 152,153 and 154th floors and maybe have a meal at renowned At.mosphere; a superb restaurant on the 122nd level.

The Dubai Mall

The area surrounding the Burj Khalifa is packed with huge buildings however the place you must visit in the area is the gigantic Dubai Mall. This colossal mall houses over 1200 shops and over 150 restaurants, it even has an ice rink and even a theme park. You can also see a huge indoor waterfall, a choreographed fountain and the amazing Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.

The Dubai Fountain

This is definitely one of the most amazing shows on offer in Dubai. Located just at the base of the Burj Khalifa tower this amazing fountain is the largest choreographed one in the world. You can witness dazzling coloured jets of water streaming 150m into the air keeping time to various musical numbers. It's really fun to watch and simply magical. It's a favourite with the kids. There are two-day time shows and in the evenings takes place every half n hour until 11 pm.

Palm Jumeirah

This stunning piece of human ingenuity has become an icon of Dubai; a giant artificial island in the shape of a palm tree, what will they think of next. The Palm Jumeirah is home to many high-end hotels. Anantara The Palm Dubai Hotel is definitely a premium Palm Jumeirah Hotel and worth considering for your stay. There are many other things to do on this man-made island and it is connected to the mainland via monorail – so getting around is a piece of cake.

Dubai Creek

Though Dubai is a now a glamorous city of skyscrapers and big brands once it was just simple town nurtured by a saltwater estuary known as the 'Creek'. This waterway enabled the economy of Dubai once upon a time when the Bani Yas tribe first settled allowing them to fish and my pearls. Today the area is home to the Dubai museum and gold, spice and textile souks.

The Walk and Beach at JBR

Jumeirah Beach Residences are always packed and brimming with activity. It's a fun-filled place where you can go shopping, dine and enjoy the beach all at once. International guest DJs play here over the weekend and it's quite a party. There is also a regular open-air cinema and a water park for the kiddies to enjoy.
