Huawei KDay: Jimmy Nevis tackles youth education with #1to100 campaign

Huawei KDay: Jimmy Nevis tackles youth education with #1to100 campaign

Cape Town Education remains a crucial part of South Africa's democracy and quality education is ranked fourth on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Much young South Africans still face the challenges of access to quality education and these challenges is often a result of a dire lack of finances.
The J Nevis Bursary is an initiative that funds a student’s higher education for the duration of their studies with the help of donors and supporters. You can purchase KDay Tickets from our website, around the world to enjoy its thrilling performances.
“Our main focus is to encourage the youth to dream beyond their circumstances and believe in themselves,” up-and-coming musician Jimmy Nevis said. “The youth of June 16, 1976, stood up and changed the course of history in South Africa, and we believe that this generation has it within them to drive our country forward, and progress in a world rich with opportunities.”

Tevin Goodwin
This year, the Geness Foundation has come on board to help fund the 2018 beneficiary, Tevin Goodwin, who will be studying towards a Bachelor in Social Sciences degree at the University of Cape Town. Before the bursary, Goodwin thought studying for a degree would be impossible, given his circumstances.
“Honestly, the chances of me being able to afford to pursue my tertiary education in 2018 would have been rather slim, if it was not for the scholarship. My mother was involved in a freak motorcycle accident which rendered her unable to work and her insurance policies did not cover all her expenses. I despaired because I knew the odds were against me as far as studying in 2018 was concerned."

The #1to100 campaign is a goal set by both the Blue Collar Foundation and Nevis to help 100 students study further.
“This is the third year that the Blue Collar Foundation is sponsoring a student’s education, but there are so many deserving young people out there, and so we are saying to society and businesses to come on board with us and help us open the doors to education for 100 young people,” Nevis says.
“We’re filled with hope and optimism about South Africa and if we want to move forward as a country we need to stand with young people and empower them for the future.”

Huawei Kfm KDay Youngsta CPT, Craig Lucas join forces for Ct Christmas cameo

Huawei Kfm KDay Youngsta CPT, Craig Lucas join forces for Ct Christmas cameo

The two performed in front of a live studio audience on Kfm's 'Flash Drive' with Carl Wastie on Wednesday.
Hip-hop sensation Youngsta CPT and crooner Craig Lucas have joined forces to give Kfm listeners a taste of what a Cape Town Christmas should sound like.
The two performed in front of a live studio audience on the Flash Drive with Carl Wastie on Wednesday. Youngsta and Lucas sang a localised version of the classic song Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
The collaboration dubbed the Huawei KDay Festive Collab gave Capetonians a “festive vibe” to remember and comes ahead of the music festival experience taking place in March next year. You can purchase KDay Tickets from our website, around the world to enjoy its thrilling performances.

The two artists are part of the festival’s line-up set to perform at Meerendal Estate. The Flash Drive host Carl Wastie said they asked the duo to come and “Capetonianize” Christmas, as it's not always about the snow falling.
Lucas said that he was a huge fan of Youngsta CPT and was really excited to perform with the hip-hop artist during the show's #FestiveVibes.
"I'm hoping that this is like way in there to more things... I want to impress him today."
Youngsta CPT said that Lucas had already impressed him with his performance.
Lucas, the Voice SA season 2 winners, said he'll be spending Christmas with family at his aunt's house.
"I don't usually cook but I've been learning to cook and bake this year, so for the first time I'm actually going make some dessert. I hope I don't poison the family... but yeah we're just going meet up at my aunt's house. Everybody's going bring the thing that they make best."

Youngsta said that it’s also important to teach the youth about a more realistic version of Christmas.
"I know it’s cool to have like the fictional version... the dwarfs and the snow and the reindeer... but at the same time it's good to bring them down to reality and let them know we've got our own version of Christmas."

Huawei Kfm KDay: 5 Lessons in Success from SA Band, Goodluck

Huawei Kfm KDay: 5 Lessons in Success from SA Band, Goodluck

Goodluck started out as a side project hustle. The band’s founders Ben Peters and Juliet Harding didn’t know anything about how to produce electronic music; all they had been their collective love of the genre and a vision that they could perform in more venues if they changed things up.
“We didn’t know that we were pushing the boundaries of how electronic music could be performed live,” says Juliet.
“We just innovated in the face of the challenges that we experienced on the way to achieving our goals.”
From a dream to a South African band who opened up for international superstar Pharrell Williams in 2015, Goodluck’s Ben, Juliet and Matthew share the lessons that have brought them from visionaries to entrepreneurs and musicians. You can purchase KDay Tickets from our website, around the world to enjoy its thrilling performances.

  1. People buy people “This is the biggest lesson that we’ve had to learn,” says Ben. “It doesn’t matter how exceptional your product is. If your market doesn’t connect with who is behind the brand, they cannot feel why they should be buying into you or committing to what you’re producing.” “We’ve learnt that without that connection it’s impossible to move our market past just a surface-level consumption of our music and into the kind of relationship that is brand fervor,” agrees Juliet. “You end up just another song on a playlist. We have to be consistently communicating what our brand ethos and culture is to help people connect with who we are. It’s personal, honest and authentic, and it has nothing to do with our product and everything to do with our brand.”
  2. The root of success is getting the right product to market
“In many ways, most musicians in South Africa also have to be entrepreneurs. This is the foundation of the music industry, and why so many musicians go on to be successful in other forms of business,” says Ben.
“Whether it’s busking on the street, hard selling to people walking by, or filling up a stadium – you have to know how to connect with your market.
“If you can’t figure out how to win them over and get them to part with their hard-earned cash for an emotional experience, you won’t be successful.
“At the end of the day, we are a product-based industry that trades in feelings, so your entrepreneurial spirit has to be strong.”

  3. Build your knowledge
“Our advice to other musicians and entrepreneurs is to spend time getting to understand all of the different elements of your industry,” says Ben.
“You don’t need to become an expert in any one of them. This is not about being a jack of all trades; it’s about knowledge. Knowing when to hire the experts is more important than trying to be the expert.
“Your role as a musician is about making the musical product, it’s not about being the best social media guru, publishing specialist or event promoter. But if you don’t know enough about all the departments that affect your market, you will get ripped off at some point.

  4. Understand your core and outsource the rest “This relates to the previous point,” says Juliet. “We have died nearly every element of the music industry at some point or other as most start-ups have. Yes, it was great learning from those experiences, but at the end of the day all it did was take us away from our core purpose writing songs for our fans.

“In the early days it’s vital to be juggling both, but you cannot sustain that. You have to start finding the right team to surround your brand. A record label that understands how to amplify your music message, a booking agent who can find you the good shows, a publishing house that can protect your rights and connect your writing with the world, a manager who can help oversee all of these partners and assistants who can action the myriad tasks of every day – these have all been vital components of our success.”
5. Always be evolving
“We recently opened The GoodLuck HQ, which is so much more than a recording studio and event space,” say Ben and Juliet.
“It’s our home base for all of our different initiatives. We need to keep evolving, and this is an environment where we can host international artists, songwriters and producers who haven’t experienced what South Africa has to offer.

Hannah Rupping wins a chance to perform at Huawei KDay with Kurt Darren

Hannah Rupping wins a chance to perform at Huawei KDay with Kurt Darren

Hannah Rupping wins a chance to perform at Huawei KDay with Kurt Darren
Cape Town Popular singer Kurt Darren last week helped make an 11-year-old girl’s dream come true.
Hannah Rupping of Stellenbosch performed Darren’s hit song Kaptein on Kfm’s breakfast show and earned a chance to sing with one of the most recognisable voices in South Africa.
Darren, an eight-time South African Music Awards winner, is scheduled to perform for the first time at the annual Huawei KDay at Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville on March 2 and Hannah is expected to take the stage alongside him. You can purchase KDay Tickets from our website, around the world to enjoy its thrilling performances.
“I am super excited to take part. It is a dream come true to sing alongside Kurt Darren,” she said.
“I heard both finalists but the public decided and Hannah had the most votes. This is a great platform for Hannah to showcase her skills but mostly to enjoy herself,” said Darren.

“I am bringing a band width called me & Mr Green and I’m going to be singing an English song for the first time called Oh My Soul. I wrote it the day after I watched the Cape Town Sevens last year.
“Monday it gets released and I got a remix with Pascal & Pearce. We might just surprise everyone with a first-time performance of Oh My Soul as Pascal & Pearce are also performing at KDay.”
Kurt Darren:
Darren, who released his first album in 2005 called For Your Precious Love, said he enjoys performing in Cape Town.
“People of all ages listen to my music and they see me as this funny guy. I do a lot of shows in Cape Town which people enjoy,” he added. Darren is set to perform at Super Sokkie with Theuns Jordaan, Die Campbells and Jan Bloukaas at Grand West on May 11.
His performance of Kaptein at Loftus Versfeld before rugby matches made him a household name in his home town Pretoria.
“I did not expect Kaptein to be so popular.

“The public embraced it and now it is playing at cricket and rugby matches, and even weddings,” Darren said.
Kfm breakfast show co-host Darren “Whack head” Simpson added: “Kaptein is such an iconic song and we wanted to offer a Kfm listener the opportunity to share the stage with Kurt.
“We ran a competition on-air asking our listeners to share voice notes of them performing the popular song.
“Hannah was the outright winner, as selected by the listeners, and she will perform Kurt’s hit song with him in front of thousands of people.”
The event will also feature fellow top local artists such as 2018 Idols SA winner Yanga Sobetwa, YoungstaCPT, DJ Kent, Craig Lucas, Lady Zamar, Mi Casa, Dr Victor and The Rasta Rebels.

Huawei Kfm KDay: Craig Lucas set for KDay

Huawei Kfm KDay: Craig Lucas set for KDay

Cape Town When Craig Lucas took to the stage two years ago for his first big performance he wasn’t a well-known singer, but famous only among family and friends.
Now the Voice SA winner returns to the Huawei KDay stage for a sentimental reason. This is his third stint, at the March 2 event and he has promised to perform new music. You can purchase KDay Tickets from our website, around the world to enjoy its thrilling performances.
“I’m really excited to return to KDay because it’s very special to me. They were one of the first people to back me and give me a chance to perform before I even entered The Voice SA. I was really just a filler act,” he said.
In 2017, Lucas was on standby at the event and, after another act dropped out, he was identified by radio station Kfm as someone with huge potential and he opened the event that year.

“The fans feel like my family at KDay and I love performing for family. My show has changed because I’m not the same guy and I feel I have developed and grown as an artist. I also don’t fit the mould of what a pop star should be,” said Lucas.
He will perform songs from his forthcoming EP.
“December was really hectic for me and I didn’t get much downtime over the holidays. January was supposed to be my time to relax, but then I started writing and recording so I’ve been so busy and haven’t stopped working.”
Living a lie:
Last year the singer penned an open letter on social media where he came out as gay and spoke of his desire to take his own life for “living a lie” he also spoke about his experiences of turning to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism.
Since then he entered and won the second season of The Voice SA in 2017 and released a successful debut album, Restless, in the same year.
Lucas said he had plans to do a nationwide tour this year and would be performing at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival next month.

“I want to get in my car and drive around the country touring my album and taking it to small venues that wouldn’t normally see performances. I want to go out and play to the people who actually listen to my music, but don’t get the opportunity to see me perform in Cape Town or Joburg.”
Lucas said he had no plans to break into the international music scene.
“It’s different and I do think about it, but I don’t need it and I don’t want to rush into it and then fail and have to come back with my tail between my legs. I also don’t want to chase that because South Africa is not enough for me, because it is and I’m enjoying my time.”

Five Things We Learned from the First Leg of the Champions League Knockouts

Five Things We Learned from the First Leg of the Champions League Knockouts

The main leg of the UEFA Champions League is behind us and that carries us closer to the trophy. I accept we took in a ton from the games, so it's the ideal opportunity for analysis before the arrival legs. Champions League fans from around the globe can acquire Champions League Final Tickets online to make the most of its dazzling exhibitions.
Here are my five things we adapted up until this point.
The Teams Are Closer Than We Thought
Most teams are still in it after the first leg. Only Atalanta and Bayern Munich seem certain for the next round, while all the other clubs will be hoping to progress.
Sure, RB Leipzig looked good and Manchester City took a solid advantage against Real Madrid last night, but I won’t be shocked if they get dumped.

That’s good news for all neutral fans out there, as every game from now on will be like a final. I know that’s a cliche, but that’s how it feels at this point of the competition.
VAR Is Not the Same in Europe and England
I’m one of the supporters of VAR despite all of its problems and I always observe carefully how the system is used. My impressions are that there is a distinction in the methodology in England and in the Champions League.
The VAR assistants interfere less habitually on the mainland. A genuine model is the primary objective of Manchester City the previous evening. There was a case for an audit in light of a potential foul against Ramos, however, the VAR group didn't stop the match.
I think the key here is the “clear and obvious mistake” definition of the rules. I like what the UEFA officials are doing, as they are leaving close decisions to the referee on the pitch, unlike their colleagues in England that seem to stop the games every time there’s even the slightest doubt.
The Bundesliga Is Very Strong
One could say that the English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga have been the dominant forces on the continent for the past two decades or so. But is the German Bundesliga making a claim for the best football league in Europe.
Bayern is flying at this moment, while any semblance of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig looked exceptionally solid too. We may wind up with three German groups in the last 8 and if the draw is benevolent, I won't be stunned to see a few of them in semis as well.

I imagine that the sensible exchange approach and the difficult work of the clubs in the nation are paying off.
Atalanta’s Attack is Something Else
We all know that Atalanta has the strongest attack in the Italian Serie A, but it was easy to say that the competition is not that strong and somewhat dismiss the true power of the team.
I believe that the 4-1 victory against Valencia showed us that would be a huge mistake. Atalanta can score a ton of goals and any team that underestimates the attack of the Italians will suffer a lot.
Atletico Madrid’s Defence Is Something Else
That’s hardly a shocker, but if I had to pick one team that’s suited for knockout tournaments, it has to be Atletico Madrid. The side is struggling to score but the discipline and the organization at the back are as good as ever.
Diego Simeone’s men are a legit threat for the title and Liverpool saw that first hand. The Champions League holders will need to find a way to break Atletico in the return leg and that will be a tough task.

Final Thoughts
I can’t wait to see what happens in the return leg and I think this might be one of the most exciting and competitive editions of the Champions League in a while. Teams from several different countries have a realistic chance of winning the trophy.
As soon as we know who goes through to the last 8, I will share my betting preview and prediction, so stay tuned.
