Our services include air/gas, soil and water analysis, inorganics and organics analysis, Geotechnical chemical testing, metals analysis, as well as asbestos identification, waste characterisation testing and waste acceptance criteria .

Soil and Water Contamination - Topsoil Analysis and Testing | ELAB

There are unacceptable risks to human health and the environment from historic land contamination which were addressed in the UK through the Environmental Protection Act 1990. br The Environment Agency (EA) and DEFRA provides further information on the legal framework and issues related to bringing contaminated land back into safe use.

Asbestos Exposure - Asbestos Fibres | ELAB

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used by the construction industry in building materials in the UK until mid-1980. As a guide any building constructed before 2000 could contain asbestos and subsequent demolition and of these buildings and burial of building waste could have resulted in land becoming contaminated with asbestos fibres.

Deviating samples - analysis and checking lab | ELAB

Deviating samples are samples which may jeopardise the validity of the reported test result for one or more of the following reasons:
The Landfill Directive (EU Directive 99/31/EC) places controls on waste disposal which include the requirements to follow waste acceptance procedures

Asbestos Exposure - Asbestos Fibres at ELAB

Asbestos Exposure - Asbestos Fibres at ELAB

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used by the construction industry in building materials in the UK until mid-1980. As a guide any building constructed before 2000 could contain asbestos and subsequent demolition and of these buildings and burial of building waste could have resulted in land becoming contaminated with asbestos fibres.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 which came into force 6 April 2012 reinforces the earlier regulations of 2006 which places a requirement on employers to protect their employees from exposure to asbestos. When in doubt about the presence of this contaminate in existing buildings, demolition sites or brownfield sites, assume it exists until testing by an accredited laboratory has shown the samples submitted are free from Asbestos contamination.
Asbestos is the name given to a group of fibrous, naturally occurring, complex silicate minerals, including:
Chrysotile (White)
Amosite (Brown)
Anthophyllite
Crocidolite (Blue)
Actinolite
Tremolite
It is a class 1 carcinogen and causes a range of respiratory diseases, such as asbestosis and mesothelioma—often remaining dormant for 15-40 years. The needle-shaped fibres can lodge in the lungs but can take some time to cause symptoms.
ELAB provides P401 fully trained technicians to examine and identify all forms of asbestos and indicates the likely levels of operator exposure when handling sample material.

If you believe that the waste you need to dispose of should go to a landfill then you need to establish if the waste meets the acceptance criteria of the disposal site. ELAB provide the following standard test suites to BS 12457-3 :

WAC – Full Waste Suite
WAC – Inert Waste Suite
WAC – Hazardous Waste Suite

Additionally we undertake testing to support Waste Characterisation Procedures. Technical Guidance WM3: Waste Classification - Guidance on the classification and assessment of waste, has now been published by the Environmental Agency and can be found on the UK Government site.
ELAB can offer quick turnaround on WAC Single Stage testing (10:1 leaching test) as recommended by the Environmental Agency to replace the traditional two stage batch test. For further information on how adopting this testing strategy can save you time and money please call our Client Liaison Manager on 01424 718618 or 07956 550806.

Deviating samples - analysis and checking lab- ELAB

Deviating samples - analysis and checking lab- ELAB

Deviating samples are samples which may jeopardise the validity of the reported test result for one or more of the following reasons:
are not preserved correctly
may have exceeded their maximum holding time prior to analysis
lack the date and time of sampling
are not cooled
have inappropriate headspace
have insufficient quantity
Accordingly we will review all samples on receipt and a trained ELAB technician will assess whether the sample is suitable with regard to the requested test(s). Should the sample be found to be deviating, we will contact you and request further instructions. Should you wish the deviating sample to be analysed, we will include a disclaimer in the report, clearly stating that the sample was deviating and that, as a result, the test result(s) may be invalid.
To help you prepare your samples, call and discuss your needs with our Technical team who will provide the appropriate containers in thermally insulated boxes for free transportation to our labs.
