If there is one thing Sri Lanka is extremely popular for then it is undisputedly the beaches that are surrounding the peal of the Indian Ocean.

Galle

The Galle beach is absolutely stunning but it may not be the most breath-taking beach in Sri Lanka. Despite the fact that it might not be the most beautiful beach it is somehow one of the most active and exciting beaches on the island which makes it to the top of the list of beaches to visit in Sri Lanka in the year 2020. You name it Galle beach will have it! Starting from surfing, snorkelling, diving and even body boarding the Galle beach have a variety of different water sports to offer its visitors. If you go during the right time you can even opt for a whale and dolphin watching journey from Galle.

Arugambay

Known as one of the best surfing beaches in the world, Arugambay is one of the top three beaches to visit in Sri Lanka. The beach and the town might not be as developed as other surf cities on the island but this makes Arugambay one of the better sports to visit for surfing. The waves are known to be an absolute delight during the season which falls from November to March.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa which started as a surf city is still one of the most popular beaches to go surfing in Sri Lanka but it has also gained popularity as one of the party cities on the island. If you are keen on having a night out dancing to the beat, with the crashing waves in the background you are bound to love the experience at Hikkaduwa from dusk till dawn partying on the beach or a beach hotel. Sri Lanka has two seasons and Hikkaduwa is generally popular from December to April.

Unawatuna

Unawatuna is yet another party beach city in Sri Lanka. There are many foreigners who have come and settled down in Unawatuna especially those who are full time surfers. Having built a culture as a surf city, Unawatuna has a reputation to host a lot of surf related activities for the young and the old. You can even find classes for youngsters or first timers who wish to experience their first time surfing. Some of the sessions and classes are conducted by locals and some classes are even held by foreigners.

Negombo

Negombo makes it to the must-visit-beaches in Sri Lanka due to the variety of things to do and see it has to offer on the beach and in the vicinity. The city which rose to prominence through the fishing village has come a long way from what it was several decades ago and despite the urbanisation, the fishing village is still one of the most visited tourist attractions in Negombo. The beach in Negombo is a sound location to visit in the morning hours and the Negombo lagoon is another beautiful location to visit. If you are staying at a hotel such as the Amagi Beach you are able to soak up the view of the lagoon as well.
