Ways to travel from Colombo to Kandy - Explore your way from Colombo to Kandy

Visiting Kandy when you go to Sri Lanka is definitely going to be on your itinerary. Once you come to Colombo there are five different ways you can select from in order to get to Kandy.

1

Take a cab

This is the easiest way to get to Kandy as it is hasslefree and you can travel at your convenience in a comfortable vehicle of your choice. There are many different cab services you can select from. Some cab services are extremely expensive but offer a very good service from beginning to end and the drivers are professional and good drivers where you do not have to worry about your life till you get to the destination. You can pick a vehicle of your choice as the charges will be based on the type of vehicle and the distance of the trip. Hence your trip does not have to be to Kandy itself it could be to a destination close by such as Hunas Falls.

2

Take the bus

Buses are the most popular mode of transportation in Sri Lanka. There are public buses as well as private buses and you can take the bus to Kandy from the Colombo main bus stand in Fort which has non-AC buses as well as AC buses. If you decide to travel during peak hours the buses can get crowded so it is best to travel during off-peak hours ideally early morning from around 5 am to 9 am or late evening from 8 pm to 11 pm. Most of the hotel deals in Sri Lanka at properties the likes of Hunas Falls Hotel Kandy, are offered during weekdays so you can avoid travelling long-distance during weekends. Buses do have a tendency to get crowded so especially the non-AC buses as they accommodate passengers more than the number of seats but if you wish to experience Sri Lanka you can take a bus to make the best of your trip.

3

Take the train

The train is definitely the easiest mode of transportation when it comes to travelling long-distance in Sri Lanka. The trains are not as common as buses but the trains are a lot more comfortable and punctual. There are first class, second class and third class compartments in all the trains and you can make prior booking for the first and second classes only. The trip to Kandy from Colombo via train is a delightful experience as you get to witness a stunning view through the island as you reach the hills.

4

Fly to Kandy

Flying to Kandy through a sea-plane or a helicopter is also an option if you are pressed for time. There are several companies that offer this service and you are able to make the bookings in advance so you are able to plan your itinerary ahead of time

5

Drive to Kandy

If you would love to make the best of your experience in Sri Lanka while exploring the lives of the locals you are able to hire a vehicle and drive up to Kandy yourself. Driving to Kandy is a delightful experience if you are not doing it during peak hours where there are so many vehicles trying to get from one place to another. You are able to make several stops on the way, take photos of the picturesque paddy-fields and mountain ranges while you drive to the hill country.
