The Beach

The beach is undoubtedly the most important attraction most people visit Bentota. Unlike most other beaches on the south coast of Sri Lanka, beaches you find in Bentota are not crowded and commercialised. The beaches are rather secluded which allows people to enjoy peace and serenity of the environment while enjoying the stunning view of the Indian Ocean which spreads out to the horizon in the distance.

Kanda Viharaya

Kanda Viharaya is a must-visit location when in Bentota. This stunning temple is a creation from the 1700s and holds many valuable statues, frescos, and sculptures that hold importance to Sri Lankan history and Buddhism. You get to observe the devotion of the locals and their lifestyles when you visit the temple as you have to go through several villages in order to get to the destination. Many Buddhists come to the temple to make their offerings and it is a great place to soak up the culture and religious practices while in Bentota.

Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Project

Not too far from Bentota is the village of Kosgoda. Kosgoda is a famous village for Turtle Hatcheries and Conservation Projects. The beaches in Kosgoda are favourite locations for female turtles to lay their eggs when the time is right. Due to poaching, there are groups that have been formed in order to take care of these babies that are yet to hatch and explore the world. Located not too far from hotels such as Saman Villas you can to take a day trip to the turtle hatchery and have a divine Sri Lankan meal from a restaurant on the way back. Some of the hatcheries have turtles that are injured and they are cared for in a special way as they are unable to exist in the wild.

River Safari on Madu Ganda

This activity is bound to be a favourite for those who love nature and animals. There are more than 110 different birds that can be spotted along the Madu River Safari as you pass several little islands that dot the route. Apart from the feathery friends, the area is also a hot-spot for ecologists and biologists. When on the safari you are able to see how nature thrives without human interference. The connection between nature and animals to assist one another is adding value to each other is something that humans can learn from.
