Dolittle movie review: Robert Downey Jr's disastrous film is worst thing to happen… – Current India

As we near the end of beloved star Robert Downey Jr’s latest film, Dolittle, one is met with an episode so utterly nonsensical, few things in life could top it. There he is, the ‘billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, genius,’ with both his arms up a CGI dragon’s behind, pulling out bagpipes from her rectum. In that moment, you wonder if it is your duty as a fellow human being to write to Marvel on Downey’s behalf, urging them to take him back. I’d much rather watch a dozen mediocre films of him flying about in tin suits than giving colonoscopies to fantastical creatures.

Hero movie review: Sivakarthikeyan starrer is a superhero thriller with an emotional… – Current India

PS Mithran, who made a smashing debut with Irumbu Thirai in 2018, is a filmmaker with great commercial sensibilities and he once again proves it in his latest outing, Hero, a superhero thriller that’s powered by a very strong emotional core. While it isn’t a perfect film, it sure has elements that hold it together and make it an engaging watch. The film also works both as a spiritual sequel and tribute to Shankar’s Gentleman.

Ghost Stories movie review: Janhvi Kapoor and Sobhita Dhulipala impress, Netflix's… – Current India

Chhapaak movie review: Deepika Padukone is stellar in Meghna Gulzar's impactful… – Current India

The opening shot of the film recreates the protests that followed the Delhi gang-rape case in 2012, setting the tone for Chhapaak. Based on a real life incident of acid attack violence and a survivor’s (Laxmi Aggarwal) story, the film starring Deepika Padukone as the protagonist leaves an impact though it lacks the shock value that one would expect from watching a film about such a heinous hate crime.

Mardaani 2 movie review: Rani Mukerji steals the show in soul-stirring and well-timed… – Current India

Mardaani 2 is disturbing, chilling, heart-wrenching and makes you uncomfortable; and perhaps that’s what the makers intended to achieve through this edge-of-the-seat crime thriller. Written and directed by Gopi Puthran with Rani Mukerji in the lead role, Mardaani 2 highlights the gruesome crimes against women, but also delves deeper into issues such as women safety, gender inequality, misogyny and toxic masculinity.

The Two Popes movie review: God bless Netflix for ending 2019 with this heavenly… – Current India

The arrival of films like The Two Popes calls for both a celebration, and quiet introspection. Why isn’t every film as good? Must we suffer through interminable mediocrity before we are rewarded for our penance? Can Netflix be forgiven for the sins of Michael Bay?

Cats movie review: Even nine lives aren't enough to survive this nightmarish hell… – Current India

CatsDirector – Tom HooperCast – Francesca Hayward, Judi Dench, Ian McKellan, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Taylor Swift

Richard Jewell movie review: Clint Eastwood, at 89, is still directing outright… – Current India

Having grown up in New Delhi, I’ve developed an intolerance for decency. There is an impatience to this city, an ingrained scepticism that has unfortunately rubbed off on the people who live in it. My gut reaction to acts of kindness is to be suspicious, to the point that whenever I experience it, I suspect good people of having ulterior motives.

Bombshell movie review: Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie lead explosive… – Current India

The first wave of post-MeToo films (and TV shows) has been rather hit-or-miss; the wounds are still too raw and lessons are still being learned. Bombshell, I am happy to report, is among the better ones.

Avane Srimannarayana movie review: Rakshit Shetty film is a quirky fantasy comedy… – Current India

Rakshit Shetty’s Avane Srimannarayana, the Tamil dubbed version of the Kannada film of the same name, is undoubtedly one of the quirkiest mainstream films to have come out in recent years. On paper, it’s the story of a group of people who are at loggerheads over some ancient treasure that has gone missing, but what it achieves cinematically, especially in terms of writing, presentation and cinematography, is commendable as it sets new benchmark for Kannada cinema with respect to aiming big and delivering without inhibitions.
