Five of the best things to eat and drink in Mozambique - A simple foodie guide

The tropical paradise in South Africa is certainly gaining popularity recently and here are some of the best things you can eat or at least, attempt to eat, while you are holiday in Mozambique.

1

Prawns

If you are going to be eating any kind of seafood dish in Mozambique, you can rest assured that it is going to be delicious, but one of the best things to try when you are in this part of Africa is to try a prawn dish. These flavourful and juicy food items are served fried or grilled. What makes this dish even tastier is the fact that they are accompanied by Peri-Peri sauce along with garlic, a side of French fries and steamed white rice. If you are dining at one of the restaurants in Mozambique or are ordering room service at your hotel the likes of Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort, make sure you try this at least once during your holiday in Mozambique.

2

Chicken

Similar to the prawns, what makes this dish special is the fact that they use peri peri spicing and sauce. You might want to know that Africa is quite proud of the peri-peri spice and uses it in almost all of the dishes found in many parts of the country. If you are a fan of this ingredient and usually request it when you are ordering a batch of French fries at McDonald's, you will be really happy in Mozambique. Peri-Peri Chicken is a must-try when you are in this part of the country and this meat is marinated in lemon juice, garlic and a lot of sauce.

3

Cashews

A fact you might not know about Mozambique is that it used to be the world's largest producer and exporter of cashews at one time and even though they are not being produced and distributed on such a wide and mass basis anymore, you will find cashew trees growing all over the country. Roadside stalls will be selling bags of cashews and you definitely must try them as they are sold in a variety of states. These make for great snacks while you are travelling or having a drink or two at the beach.

4

Fish

You will be able to buy fresh fish right off the boat as soon as they get to the land at any one of the beaches along the coast in Africa. You will find that many people grill the fish on a barbeque and eat it right at the beach and if you are in the mood to mingle with the locals and other travellers, you can join one of these groups and have a great time in Mozambique.

5

Tropical fruits

No visit to a tropical country is complete without you trying one of the exotic fruits while you are there. Mangoes are special in Mozambique and they are literally the juiciest mangoes you will ever taste in all your life.
