Some fun and quirky facts about everyone's favourite sugary snack, candy floss, or cotton candy as our American cousins would have it.
In the UK it has always been called candy floss. The Americans call it cotton candy. Our Australian and New Zealand cousins call it fairy floss.
In South Africa it is Ghosts Beard, France Papas Beard. The Germans call it 'Suikerspin' or spun sugar.
Obviously it is pure sugar, so its never going to count as one of your five per day. BUT, a typical candy floss on a stick is around 70 calories, as it is more air than sugar. So as long as you limit your consumption and brush your teeth there is absolutely no reason why it can't be enjoyed. Oh and it fat and gluten free.
We are not sure where it started but it turned into a surprising wedding trend, with a number of brides having candy floss bouquets instead of the usual flowers. Gives a whole new meaning to 'They look good enough to eat'
The only ingredient needed to make candy floss is sugar. Sugar tends to be white so the candy floss turns out white. The multitude of colours you see cotton candy in are as a result of adding a small amount of powdered food colouring to the mix. Not all colours are possible, adding red, results in the most popular colour of pink, but you cant get a true red, the colours all tend to be shades of pastel.
There is a dessert museum in Manila, that has 12,000ft of delicious sweet confectionary. These are spread across 8 rooms. One of which is a cotton candy forest, made with wholly edible candy floss.
Flavoured candy floss has been around for a long time. Now there is a new kid on the block. CBD infused candy floss. Unlike medical cannabis sold in the UK, this stuff actually has 100mg of THC in. That is the active ingredient that give you the 'high'.
