Slip on flanges are connected to the pipe via Fillet weld from the top. They're manufactured with an inside diameter that is slightly bigger than the pipe's outside diameter. Socket Weld Flanges: A Socket Weld has a pipe attachment detail in which a pipe is inserted into a particular area of a Valve, fitting or flange. In contrast to buttweld fittings, Socket Weld fittings are mainly used for small pipe diameters generally, for piping whose nominal diameter is NPS 2 or smaller. Socket Weld Flanges are available in pressure from 150# and up and pipe schedule 40 to schedule 160. Specifying the pipe schedule ensures that ID of the SW Flange matches the ID of pipe for smooth fluid flow.
