Ways to see Sri Lanka from a bird's eye view

Have you ever wanted to see Sri Lanka from above? To trace the rivers and railroads snaking through the greens of trees, and to follow the edge of the coastline as far as it goes? Here are some ways to do so!

1

Scenic flights

Scenic flights

Everyone knows the main airport, but there is another, smaller airport in Ratmalana that sees quite a bit of domestic action. You can fly as far as Jaffna from this airport, but since it’s closer to the south of the island, this is a lovely place to take a flight towards the bottom of the island and enjoy the coastline from the view of a bird. Enjoy the interesting flight down the edges of the island and watch as the blue waves encroach upon the golden shore. You will also have a great view of iconic landmarks along the way, which will look different from this perspective. Enjoy the sight of the cities beneath you, as you observe the life and vibrancy of the southern coastline. The flight will show you, in an hour or less, a quick and beautiful tour of one of the most beautiful islands in the world. If you’re staying at one of the Wadduwa Hotels then this is a great spot from which to go!

Balloon tour

Balloon tour

Nothing says magic quite like a hot air balloon! Fun, quirky and adventurous all at the same time, hot air ballooning will give you the equivalent of a leisurely stroll through sunlit streets - in the sky. You can take a balloon tour in Kandalama and enjoy the spectacular sight of hovering over the Kandalama tank - which stands out like a blue jewel among the deep greens around it - while the breeze gently ruffles your hair. Make your way over the mountains and try to spot Sigirya from your vantage point! The change in perspective will make you appreciate just what you’re seeing, and marvel at the close way man and nature have worked together. The balloon takes off at 6am, with a majestic view of the sunrise as you waft upwards.
Enjoy the different sights - from the ‘sleeping soldier’ mountain to the birds that will fly alongside you - and have an interesting history lesson with your pilot! At the end of your breath taking trip you may even be able to enjoy a toast with the rest of the guests and the crew - which makes the ride lovely!

Paramotoring

Paramotoring

This option and the ones to follow are for the thrill seekers! Safe, but ever so fun, paramotoring is a great way to see the sights of Sri Lanka, as you sit in this machine and fly like a bird. While you should always make sure the weather is on your side, paramotoring can be a lengthy and incredible way to see many sights.
It works by using the vehicle to climb into the sky, then powering off and just gliding on the wind, like a bird. The feeling is unlike anything else in the world, and those who try this get to see a variety of things. Trust your pilot and enjoy the coastal beauty of Bentota! You’ll have an immensely good time, and start to deeply appreciate the beauty of the country from far away.

Paragliding

Paragliding

Paragliding is possible in Ella, in the Ella Adventure Park. The flight lasts for about 25 minutes, and you fly with an experienced pilot. The landscape is stunning, one of the best views in the country. There’s a reason why it’s one of the most popular tourist spots in the country, while never being overcrowded or touristy! Enjoy the beautiful panorama of this gorgeous place. You can fly through valleys and gaze at the tall mountains rising before you. There is paragliding available at Makuldeniya ridge as well, which offers more stunning views.
