Fun things to do in Wadduwa- A quick beachy getaway

Wadduwa is a small coastal town located not so far from the bustling city of Colombo and therefore, a popular destination to escape the mundane routine. Here are some tips and things to do.

1

Getting there

The distance from Colombo to Wadduwa is about 33 km. This would take about an hour on the road via the Southern Expressway and is the fastest option. One can also take the train if they don't mind a slightly slower yet beautiful journey.

2

What to pack

This is a beach holiday. Therefore, the usual beach holiday list should suffice- lots of sunscreens, a hat, shades, your favourite swimwear, clothes that are breezy and comfortable, flip flops, camera and of course, a lot of enthusiasm! If you are into water sports and have your own gear, you could choose to bring them along as well.

3

What to do? Wadduwa Beach

Of course, this has to be the first thing on the list. After all, this is what the entire trip revolves around! The beach is beautiful and nestled amidst palm trees, golden sands, blue skies and the glorious tropical sun shining away. The sunsets are spectacular and must not be missed. Ensure to have a camera ready to capture a post-card worthy snap of the sun setting down the horizon, lighting up the skies in a multitude of colours and silhouettes of the swaying coconut trees. If you are an early riser, head to the beach during the break of dawn to witness the arrival of the fishermen proudly chattering about their catch of the day and selling them as fresh as it gets!

4

Brief Gardens

A short ride further down south from Wadduwa will take you to another town called Bentota, where the unmistakeable Brief Gardens is situated. It is the popular garden and home of Bevis Bawa, a well-known architect in Sri Lanka. The garden seems to take inspiration from many novels. The beauty of the garden is reflected in the skilful way the architect has used the space, ensuring every piece of work blend seamlessly into nature. There are quite a few sculptures and statues that are bound to pique your interest. Do wear a pair of trainers to be on the safe side as there may be some muddy trails.

5

Madhu River Safari

Another place close to the Brief Gardens and therefore can easily fit into a one-day itinerary. This is Sri Lanka's further wetland. The safari is about an hour long and takes you through the mangrove and appreciate the rich biodiversity due to the soil being very fertile that has encouraged the growth of wetland plants. There are about 19 endemic plants and more than 300 other species. Due to this reason, the area is considered to be a biologist's treasure cove!

6

Treat yourself to a spa session

Take yourself on a little holiday from your holiday! A spa session is the best way to unwind from the exploring and other activities. There are many resorts in Sri Lanka, considering it is a country that is popular among tourists in the recent past. Wadduwa has its fair share of resorts and hotels as well and you shouldn't find it hard to indulge in some holistic experience. The Blue Water Hotel and Spa is a popular spot for those who wish to experience the best of luxury treatment.
