Galle is a picturesque town in down South Sri Lanka with quaint cafes and restaurants along with beautiful boutique resorts. The streets of Galle fort are perfect for a stroll in the evening with cobble streets that give the vibe of a miniature Rome. Galle is a UNESCO World Heritage City that adds to its attractiveness as a tourist hub.

Galle Fort

Galle fort is a must visit place in Galle that every visitor goes to without fail. Built in 1588 by the Portuguese and later taken over by the Dutch is a fort that was built to protect the city from outside threats. A walk down here is a perfect way to explore the city where you can enjoy some street food or an ice-cream from a local seller. It is usually busy with locals you come here to spend the evening and even artists camped up painting the beautiful surroundings. The ambiance around the fort is great and a place where people picnic and enjoy a beautiful sunset. Not to forget the lighthouse around the corner which is a picture-perfect sight and obviously an Insta-famous spot. It is the oldest light station in Sri Lanka and still operates as surprising as it sounds.

The region is famous for its amazing coast line and fun activities and many a boutique hotel in Galle. Unawatuna is one of the most famous beaches in Galle that boasts a number of quaint cafes and restaurants. The vibe here is great where you can enjoy a yummy cocktail or a great meal with the sunset in the background. You could even swim here or enjoy the sun laying in the golden sandy beach. Unawatuna beach is also great for surfing. Dalawella beach is also a famous beach specially for travellers looking to take the famous Instagram picture of the swing hanging off the tree. Many hotels in Galle are built with an entrance to the beach such as The River House.

One of the best ways to explore Galle is to take it by foot. Surprisingly enough there are many historical monuments in this small city such as the old clock tower in Fort. Built in 1883 this old clock tower is a sight to see and even capture some authentic pictures. The Dutch hospital is also a great place to walk around which is home to a large number of quaint cafes. You can enjoy some yummy desserts, a cup of coffee or even go for a great meal not to forget the delicious fresh sea food in the city. Galle fort is also a haven for shopping with shops offering some authentic Sri Lankan jewellery, batik clothes and souvenirs. You can find hand crafted bags and other beach wear or even find some Aruyveda goodies in the shops around. You can also enjoy a spa treat after a long walk, a perfect way to relax and end the day.
