Interesting Things to Know Before You Visit Dhigurah- Quite literally a strip of paradise.

The Maldives consists of about 1000 islands, out of which only about 200 are inhabited, while the rest are either private resort islands or uninhabited ones. Dhigurah is a local fishing island belonging to the Alif Dhaal Atoll with a population of approximately 600! Here are more facts.

1

Adhere to the dress code

The Maldives is a Muslim country and follows a very strict conservative rule. While the private islands are lenient with the clothes you adorn, when it comes to a local island, it is of utmost importance that you respect their laws and dress modestly. Ensure you cover your shoulders and aren't wearing anything too short. Ideal outfits would be, long maxi dresses, skirts, linen pants and tops that are ideal for the tropical climate.

2

No alcohol allowed

The local restaurants and cafes do not serve alcohol and neither do they allow to consume alcohol. Alcohol and pork are prohibited from the islands and will be taken by the custom. However, this doesn't mean you cannot enjoy your favourite cocktail while holidaying. There are a few hotels and resorts on the island like The Residence Maldives Dhigurah which has a bar and restaurant that will stir up some great cocktails for you. Additionally, it also has the most sought-after luxury water villas in the Maldives, thus giving you the whole luxury Maldivian experience!

3

Spot whale sharks

The island is home to these magnificent marine creatures, and they can be spotted all-year-round! If you are an adrenaline junkie or a marine life enthusiast or simply curious and adventurous, gear up and try out scuba diving. Alternatively, you can also go snorkelling and witness the beautiful ecosystem that is underwater.

4

Watch the sunset and sunrise

Dhigurah, a Divehi word which translates into a long island, is aptly named for it is quite a long and narrow island; about 3 kilometres long and only a mere 250 meters wide! This means, if you stand on one edge of the island and simply turn around, you will be able to see the opposite coastline! This is an experience like no other! Moreover, it makes it a great spot to experience the early morning sun rays and the dusk. A time-lapse video of the sun's journey across the island can be beautifully captured here.

5

A transfer is required

The International Airport in the country has an island for itself! This means, to go from the airport to an island, you will require a means of transport. The popular mode of travel is the speedboat. However, if you wish to splurge and experience an entirely different scene, opt for the seaplane ride.

6

Bats everywhere!

Another species that call this island their hometown are the bats. You will find them in abundance simply hanging down the branches of trees or flying around.

7

Beautiful Sandbar

Sandbar is essentially an elevated region of sand or gravel. Dhigurah has a sandbar that stretches far into the sea. It is ideal for a quiet stroll during dawn or dusk and getting lost in the surroundings of nature for a while.
