A visit to a temple is one of the best ways to learn about Sri Lankan culture and history. Just about 3 kilometres from Bentota, you can find Galapata Raja temple, a place full of historic significance. This temple built in the 12th century has some nice murals and paintings relating to Buddhism as well as 2500-year-old stupa; a structure that is scared to followers of Buddhism. It is also believed that this stupa holds the canine tooth of Kasyapa, Buddha's main discipline. You can get to the temple by crossing the bridge south of Aluthgama and taking the Elpitiya road for 1.5 kilometres and finally taking a right turn from the main road for another 1 kilometre.
