When we think Physiotherapy, we consider it is only for adults. We often forget to think about the children. Children seem to think they are indestructible. However, children are just as prone to injuries as adults. In fact, with growth spurts and developing bones (“growing pains”), children and youth are even more at risk of injuring themselves during day-to-day activities. A physiotherapist can help them get back to fun and back to being a kid!
Like adults children also end up having a fracture, sprain strain, concussion, and arthritis. Yes… Children also get arthritis. We call it Juvenile Arthritis (JA). This is the case where your child’s immune system begins acting weird and start to destroy the protective layers of the joints. Your child might experience swelling, stiffness, and pain in any joints of their body…even in their jaws.
Although there currently isn’t a cure for JA, there is an effective therapy. With proper management, most children with this disease lead healthy active lives and enter adulthood without any major physical disability. In some forms of the disease, children can go into complete remission as they grow into adulthood. The treatment approach for JA emphasizes the involvement of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including physiotherapist.
Physiotherapists can help reduce pain caused by JIA:
With specific therapeutic modalities;
By recommending the use of assistive devices, such as splints; and
Prescribing a proper exercise program that will maintain the function of joints and decrease pain in joints by strengthening the muscles surrounding them.
