Poinsettia - Euphorbia pulcherrima

The Poinsettia also known as Mexican flame leaf, Christmas star, and Winter rose is one of the most popular gift plant for the holidays. You can get this plants in red, white or bright pink foliage. Although beautiful through the winter, they require very special care in order to bloom all year long. Most gardeners, unless an expert, do discard these after the end of the year. Temperature & Humidity
Day temperature of an average home, in the 70Fs, is fine but night temperature needs to be a lot cooler - in the 50Fs. Do not place near any drafts. The Poinsettia does prefer high humidity during its growth period so use some of the tricks to raise the humidity level.

Light
If you brought home your Poinsettia while in bloom, as most of us do, place it in a high light spot. Ideally good morning sun should be followed by indirect light during the hottest part of the day. You must also allow this plant to get half a day of complete darkness and half of light. Rest of the year medium light is sufficient.

Water
Allow soil to dry out somewhat between through waterings.

Do not fertilize this plant during the holiday season; water only.

Caution
Although it has been rumored that Poinsettias are toxic it is not true. However people sensitive to latex may suffer an allergic reaction to this plant. Also, if eaten, the leaves can sometimes cause diarrhea and vomiting.
