Best Beaches in Tangalle - Peaceful Beach Getaway

Tangalle is a quiet coastal town in the southern parts of Sri Lanka that is sought after by those who wish to have a more relaxed and peaceful time with the waves.

How to get to Tangalle?

Public transport wise, you can either take the train or the bus from Colombo Fort to either Matara or Mirissa. From there, you can take another bus to Tangalle. Alternatively, you can choose to drive yourself- this would take about 4-5 hours if you take the E1 highway.

Which beaches to go to? - Goyambokka Beach

This is the popular one out of the list. Unlike popular beaches like Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa, Goyambokka beach offers quiet tranquillity and enough privacy to enjoy your time, especially during the off-season (May- November). This beautiful beach with clean blue sea is ideal for quick dip and swimming during December-April. Nevertheless, it is good to check the condition before you swim as the water can be rough here. Cafes and hotels like the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, a popular option in Sri Lanka for luxury resorts, can be found along the coast where you can enjoy meals and drinks. Most small cafes offer free umbrella or deck when you purchase a meal; you can also relax by the natural shade provided by the coconut trees. Goyambokka beach looks to the east and faces the rising sun. Therefore, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the sunrise.

Silent Beach

If you are looking to spend a lazy afternoon in a secluded spot with a view, this is the place to go. Silent beach has amazing cream sand, crystal clear water and palm trees in all direction providing a beautiful sight and a quiet environment. Silent Beach is the place for you to enjoy a nice stroll, sit down with a book or admire the view. It is not very suitable to enjoy a nice swim as the waves in Silent Beach can be strong and water gets deep quickly from the shore.

This could easily be the most popular beach if it weren't for the difficulty in getting to the beach. Therefore, it is best that you ask the locals in town or tuk-tuk driver in Tangalle to take you to the beach.

Rekawa Beach

Rekawa beach is popular for being the most important sea turtle nesting sites in Sri Lanka. Five different species of Turtles, wade to the shore and lay their eggs in the sand on the shell swept beach of Rekawa every night throughout the year. The best time to see the turtles is during full moon periods between January – April. The turtles tend to come to the shore when there is plenty of moonlight and clear sky. Therefore, you can try to visit this beach on full moon-ish nights at any month to catch sight of them. You do not have to pay an entrance fee to witness this spectacle. Apart from this significant popularity, it also creates an ideal setting to lie back and relax on the countless sand dunes along the coast of Rekawa beach.

To get to you can ask directions from the locals in the town or as a tuk-tuk driver in Tangalle to take you there which will take less than 30minutes.

Tangalle Bay Beach

If you choose to drive down the coast, this beach is worth the stop. It appears to be an island and relatively less occupied. Though not a suitable spot to swim, it occasionally provides a beautiful view of the sky at sunset during which the tide is low and is suitable to take a walk.
