How to take the ore of a brainstorm, refine it, and find the polished idea inside.
How is "traditional" strategic planning defined today? I think it has changed so much we may be thinking different things.
When I facilitate strategic planning sessions for our chapters and sections, in defining what is a strategic plan/why do strategic planning?, I ask "If you don't know where you are going, how will you know when you've arrived?" For vision, I ask the group "what does your perfect future look like?" perhaps these could be more updated and inspired...
I often respond to this comment by asking: (1) let's get some clarity about the exact timeframe we have been doing what we're talking about. I'll also ask "what conditions supported this being the right choice at the time and are those same conditions present today?"
To facilitate innovative solutions, we have to help a group get clear on the value the ideal solutions should create so that the ideas they share can be focused to meet that requirement. Example: "We want to generate ideas that ensure a member feels a deep sense of connection to our association community within one week of joining."
